  1. @RandomShart yes there is: Ukraine would join NATO in full and happily host nuclear strike threats against Russia just like NATO after the fall of the USSR and Warsaw Pact. At least Finland and Sweden have shown reluctance to host nukes but Ukraine is a different story- just listen to Zelensky during the Munich Security conference in February last year. This is Russia's red line.

The USSR's need to control afghanistan is not nearly as pressing as Russia's need to keep Ukraine neutral and Sevastopol. USSR was much bigger and economically buoyant, Russia has its back against the wall surrounded by NATO and more desperate.
