@TTFerdinand the only thing that deters aggression is a balance of power and this goes both ways, all the way down the ages to the nuclear age and mutually assured destruction. Human beings tend to abuse powers and slip into impunity when their superiority goes unchallenged for a while, its human nature. That's the root of NATO expansion- the feeling of invincibility that it could do as it pleased now that USSR was gone. Military alliances are meant to be small. When you have one expanding in peacetime in multiple waves designed to cut their chief adversary from access to the oceans and trade, then there's bond to be some paranoia triggered. Its unfortunate the West seems unwilling or unable to understand why military alliances shouldn't be expanding saying "its their decision" even though it hasn't been put to a referendum like 90% of the countries NATO swallowed People make bad decisions and its up to the rest of us to deal with the consequences when those decisions backfire and with good reason.
