If we call a spade a spade, then we have to admit that Europe is too scared of Russia to send their troops into Ukraine without the approval of the US., and they have no confidence in their own power to enforce article 5 by themselves. America is the big bully they've been hiding behind to bark at Russia.

First off, Trump has said nothing about an alliance with Russia, but Europe is overreacting to his dialogue with Putin by threatening to kick out American bases and form alliances with China , Canada and Mexico. If Trump makes an alliance with Putin, it will be because of what the EU does to threaten America, not in isolation.
