Why did Latvia join NATO in 2004?

@marlandtownsend4715 American taxpayers are the ones that will lose this war. With soaring inflation, crumbling infrastructure and now a new war with potential to become nuclear, they will also experience the radioactive fallout- that they paid for in full with their taxes.

@ikm64 Putin ain't no bully. When Western media paraphrase him they cut out bits and pieces and leave out whole contexts to make him seem crazy, same thing they did to Trump. But I listened to Putin and I only saw a man frustrated with the constant expansion of a military alliance created to destroy the USSR, not content with victory but going for total annihilation with its aggressive surrounding of what's left of Russia. I'm not even European, I'm African. But it seems like peace has made Europe complacent, thinking they can continue to disregard/misquote the security concerns of a nuclear nation that walked the talk of peace between 1991 and 2004 when the second NATO expansion wave began. We in Africa can only hope a wise European President can call out NATO for what it is... We don't need nuclear winter here... We will surely die.

@SlovJena how did you know about Nigeria? That's my country, wrecked by a brutal dictator we've petitioned the US and EU several times about but they ignored us. When I see ignorant Europeans talk about liberating Eastern Europe from dictators I cry inside. Africa is absolutely being destroyed by dictators but these guys don't care. Everyone here is trying to migrate...

@peterisberzins3911 okay so it's based on the past occupation as part of the USSR, and not a present/potential threat at the time. Thanks for clearing that up.
