They deceived them into thinking they had a chance by calling Russians orks and saying they were using rusty AK-47s, had no boots, were stealing public toilets and were using washing machines for electronics. All of that propaganda was to make Ukrainian (and western) people think Russia was a pushover, and join in the war.
