Ok so here’s the thing the reason Texans have said they have the right to secede is because they never have actually read and researched things they claim the annexation treaty had a clause that said they could secede whenever they wanted but the fact is that someone at some point in time decided to spread misinformation and confuse the public because it actually says that Texas can split itself into at most 5 states essentially seceding from itself and with such phrasing likely got mixed up by some Texan nationalist

The Union has ALWAYS been opposed to secession even before confirming it after the civil war this was shown during the war of 1812 when the New England region had a fairly strong secession movement and yet the Union stopped them from doing it except with less violence as the separatist movement didn’t really start a violent movement so it was solved after the war of 1812 with diplomacy
