Zanzibar is an island and crossroads of the world for tens of centuries, why claim it for a continent, is that not a form of cultural appropriation?

Why is it not possible Mr. Gurnah is a descendent of Arabs from Oman who traded in slaves, or perhaps his people were from Persia/West India. The island was a crossroads for tens of centuries, but he's claimed by a continent? Remember, Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar. Abdulrazak left Zanzibar as a teen-ager, then spent the next 55 years or so in England. I'm happy for him, but the rest of the world needs some perspective, and not make up "wishes" about who he is.

He left as a teen-ager, none of the news coverage really makes that clear. He was born in 1948, the revolution happened in 1964. Assertions are being made about him to align with current social and political norms.
