The data so far does not reflect that, and certainly not for mandates.

I'm a non-religious Dem in California who has been jabbed 3X, but you are incorrect, if you look at the stats in my county of Los Angeles, it is not the "religious fanatics" who are not vaccinated. I am anti-mandate, not anti-vax, but your side has redefined my position so there's no room for anti-mandate, and you brush anyone with skepticism as either a religious fanatic or conspiracy theorists. The virtue signaling finger waggers used to be on the Right, they moved to the Left, and you are proof of that.

  11.  @steppinstone  I'm looking at both Statista and WHO. Again, India has 1.3 Billion people, USA 330 million, you really think India has a 5-1 lower ratio of infection than the U.S.? The CDC put out a recommendation on Vital Statistics Reporting Guidance for Covid, and encouraged Covid to be on Death Certificates. If your loved one had Covid on the DC, you were eligible for pandemic related assistance. That's only one incentive for a higher count in the U.S. It does not make sense that the U.S. would be much different than the combined EU countries, and it is not.

In my state of California Blacks and Latinx are fearful of vaccination, it's not about access, especially in Los Angeles County, so another metric is at work, and why that population has more hospitalization and death. You can tell the BBC enjoys pointing and waging fingers at those they do not approve of, and ignore 3rd rail issues like race and ethnicity when it comes to vaccination hesitancy, which is a big factor.

"Cutter Incident". Children got polio, children are not getting SarsCov2. "People", like Biden and Harris who said they would not take a "Trump" vaccine? If you look at Los Angeles County where I live, it's not the political Right unvaccinated, where both White and Asian populations have the highest vaccination rates. I'm a registered Dem, have been since 1973, and consider myself a moderate pushing back on both extremes, but finding FACTS and bundling them into truths has become a difficult task. Mandates are not working, for good and bad reasons, so we must face that and change our public health message.

The yearly flu causes 9 million–41 million illnesses, and 140,000–710,000 hospitalizations. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year.

The "team" was only in the NSC, and it is normal for an incoming President to reorganize, which was a campaign promise. They did not "clean house", that is false. The world mostly followed WHO recommendations, and the US also followed the NIH and CDC. Outcomes appear to be overall the same, with differences in reporting protocol making up most of the number differentials. A virus does not care about politics or borders.

The epidemiology of SarsCoV2 has yet to be fully studied, and it will be a decade before that's done. The Democratic Northern State of Massachusetts, and the Southern GOP State of Tennessee, have the same population, different rules but the same outcome. Explain that? Next, we can talk Florida vs California, when age adjusted.

  28.  @rm1371  It's a rush to judgement, it will take the science of epidemiology a decade to study SarsCoV2. In the US, it is clear from stats that behaviors other than masks and vaccines have a high impact on death rates. We have certain populations with many co-morbidities, like diabetes and asthma, average age is higher, certainly much higher than many African nations. Younger population, less per-capita deaths. Tough to make general assertions at this early stage. Our public health authorities have failed us, that's the lesson we need to take from this epidemic.

Being over the age of 65, I am vaxed with booster. Should a 3-year old be masked and vaccinated, I would not mandate that at this point based on the cost/benefit ratio I see. Mandates are not working in the U.S., we should ask ourselves, why" Science is the act of asking "why", so let's do science.

I'm in favor of mRNA technology, was taking molecular biology courses at college in 1985 when breakthroughs occurred, so it's about time. There's a difference between hard science and public health policy. During the HIV/AIDS epidemic, I was in San Francisco in college and watched Fauci go from being a scientist to a public health official, essentially, a politician. We've a lot of work to do in planning for next time.

  38.  @tangimeme  Are you denying the total number of deaths as reported is FALSE? Are not DEATHS a primary baseline for outcome? Number of testing would not affect number of deaths, CDC does not require a test for Death Certificates. MA and TN very much the same, different politics, same outcome Density of Boston much higher than Nashville, granted, but I also checked AVERAGE AGE, and the difference is less than one year. It's a good comp. If density is such a big factor as you say, would not a mandate be appropriate for Boston, but not Nashville?

  46. Your stats are ridiculous and anti-science. It's only one day. Japan had a huge spike Sept/Oct. The state of Oregon, a Dem state, has the same vax rate as Florida 73%. Illinois is only at 70%. Rural areas will skew different, not because of religion, but because of geography and already distanced population. Tennessee had ZERO DEATHS on December 19th, better than Japan.

I do not rely on pure data or "science" to determine how I act in the world. Do you? We all "guess", and so does science. If you want to take "pride" in how Japan has dealt with the pandemic, perhaps we should look all the way back to Japan's response to "The Diamond Princess"?

There are potentially many others, like regular medication taken by Africans which act as protease inhibitors, medication not used widely in the EU and North America. You don't need "magical thinking" to understand the "why" of it.

I have college level credit in Molecular Biology, and was in school as mRNA breakthroughs were made in the mid-1980s. Mandates should not be the result of guesses, and that's all we have at this point.
