Herodotus does use the name in his history, but in ancient Greek, Pale, means to wrestle, as Israel does in Hebrew. Greek is indo-European, Hebrew is Semitic, and why the difference. Palestine means Israel in ancient Greek.

"Insult" is the myth, not fact.

"Philistine" as the origin is just theory, there are many others. The ancient Greek work for to Wrestle is "PALE".

The Brits freed the region of Palestine from the Ottoman Turk in WW1. They did it with the help of both Arabs and Jews. The Ottoman and Germans agreed to peace terms contracting their borders. The Brits wanted to reward both the Arab and Jews with former Ottoman land, the Jews agreed, the Arabs did not.
2
That's one theory, but it was not a slur, just SOP by Romans who took away or took back authority in a region. Syria-Palestina for the region, and Aelia Capitolina for Jerusalem.
1
Yes, Golda Meir's passport also said "Palestine" before 1949.
1
@nefaristo No, the Ottoman/Turk referred to the region as Palestine. It was the San Remo conference of 1920 that officially named it the Palestine Mandate.
1
@giulioferretti5310 "Contempt"? no, that is a myth and not supported by facts

Jacob's name was changed by G_d before the Exodus. Genesis 32:28

During the time of the Ottoman Empire, the term "Palestine" was used to refer to a region within its territories, although its administrative boundaries and usage varied over time. Here are some key points regarding the Ottoman use of the term: Geographical Region: The term "Palestine" historically referred to a geographical region that roughly corresponds to modern-day Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip. It was part of the broader Levant region within the Ottoman Empire.

@altblechasyl_cs2093 Ottoman Turks used the name Palestine for 100s of years before the Brits. @altblechasyl_cs2093 I believe so, not uncommon when the Romans took away self-governance from a region, they renamed it. Some say a slur, but there is no historical record of that, it was SOP for Romans. Romans also changed the name of Jerusalem, but that didn't hold for long.

One theory, Herodotus, father of history, used the word Palestine. In ancient greek the word "Pale" means to Wrestle, and Israel in Hebrew means to Wrestle. Palestine is the Greek work for Israel.

The Hashemites may disagree with you.
1
Yes, few know that Palestinian Authority leader Abbas earned his PhD equivalent in Moscow.
1
@MacLevistein There is a "P" and P sound in Hebrew, but it was the Greeks who called the region Palestine, the root of which is Pale, which means to Wrestle in Greek. Israel also means to Wrestle. The Greek work for Israel is Palestine.

@anthonymorris5084 Those two sentences took me 50+ years of research to write. Thanks.

Pan-Arabists refuse a Jewish majority in the region. True for over 100 years. Proof? "Report on the State of Palestine presented to the Right Honourable Mr. Winston Churchill P.C., M.P. by the Executive Committee of the Third Arab Palestine Congress. Jerusalem, March 28, 1921." - Library of Congress

@lazer8776 No, question, Western Imperial Rome called it Palestine. That's not in dispute?
1
@lazer8776 No one disputes that Western Imperial power called it Syria-Palestina, and that it was later invaded by tribes from the south? My "proof" is simple, UN Resolution 181 was a vote which allowed a portion of that region to have a new name, Israel. Same happened in the area formerly known as India, now a portion called Pakistan, and another area once called East Pakistan now called Bangladesh. There was never a state called Jordan until after WW2, either.
1
Yes, most don't know the history of Egyptian annexation. Nasser's Pan-Arab dream failed, we are still paying the price of that failure.
1
There was historical reason to call the region Syria-Palestina, and remember, the Romans also changed the name of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina.

@polarbear4612 There were and are, Palestinian people. Golda Meir was Palestinian, said so on her passport, until 1949. She's quoted as saying just that. Jews earned a right to a nation/state fighting alongside the Brits in WW1 when they freed the region of Palestine from the Ottoman Turk.
1
@polarbear4612 I agree, don't yell at me. It was a region, not a people. I also don't know why a so-called "indigenous" people would want to have a non-indigenous name, and indo-European one, to boot, given that label by an Imperial Power. It's nuts.
1
@polarbear4612 I was not "corrected", but added context to your statement, and said Golda Meir considered herself Palestinian before 1948.
1
@polarbear4612 Golda Meir called herself a Palestinian while under the British mandate. I quoted her, not me. She then said after 1948 she was no longer a Palestinian. I did not say Palestine was a "region", the world said so, both the Christian, Muslim and non-Sectarian world did, until the idea of a "people" was created as part of KGB propaganda during the cold-war era of anti-Capitalist, "anti-colonialism" policies. Soviets are gone, time to end that failed policy.
1
@lazer8776 There is no period documentation, it was an historical assumption made centuries later. I don't "know", and no one else does, that the point

@misc_channels-po6rh predates the nation/state of Israel.
1
@misc_channels-po6rh Israel has been attacked by Arab/Muslim terrorism since before the term "Palestinian" existed.
1
@misc_channels-po6rh Israel had cease fire with Gaza, more than 20,000 Gazans were coming into Israel each day prior to Oct 7. Yes, there was "mowing the lawn" to suppress Hamas terror, but the border was open. It' proved to be a mistake.
