"The *French Mandate for Syria and Lebanon* originated from the aftermath of World War I and the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The League of Nations established the mandate system to administer former Ottoman territories until they were deemed ready for self-governance. In 1920, France was granted the mandate over Syria and Lebanon, formalized by the League of Nations in 1923. The mandate system was intended to differ from colonialism, with the governing country acting as a trustee until the inhabitants were considered eligible for self-government.

@mattblack118 Bashar al-Assad's regime has been found to have used chemical weapons multiple times during the Syrian civil war. Investigations by the United Nations, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and other organizations have confirmed several chemical attacks carried out by the Syrian government. Notable incidents include the 2013 sarin attack in Ghouta and the 2017 sarin attack in Khan Shaykhu

@MTx485 I understand the history, some still aspire to regain Al-Andalus, the Islamic version of manifest destiny. There are many aspirational stories in this mix, including Peter the Great's aspiration for a Russian warm water port in the Midi. Erdogan cannot have one foot in the West, and one foot out, not with Nukes. I'm still waiting for the West to push him out of Northern Cypress or demand the Hagia Sophia not be a Mosque, but returned back to only a historical site. Too much perpetual chaos in The Levant.

The League of Nations temporary mandates were not secret treaties, they were out in the open and made at San Remo in 1920, codified in 1923. Erdogan may have aspirations, but the nation/states of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, and even Saudi Arabia, will stand. Erdogan is a member of NATO. How would he exert Empire in that context?

Obama administration provided support to the Free Syrian Army (FSA). The U.S. offered humanitarian aid, non-lethal military gear, and later, through Operation Timber Sycamore, covert CIA operations to arm and train Syrian rebels. The goal was to bolster opposition forces against the Assad regime and combat ISIS. These forces in the South were also supported by Mossad and were not Jihadists.

HTS stand for "Greater Levant" which would include Jerusalem, yes.

@oliverselle2861 There was no CIA at the time of Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was not a US covert project. Most intel thought Japanese would hit the Philippines first even though there were valid reports it would be Hawaii.

Yes, and it appears Assad himself promoted Jihadists to get support from the West.

Assad interviewed by 60 minutes and then again by Charlie Rose 11 and 9 years ago. He played the Jihadist card then to garner support from the West.

Assad interviewed on 60 Minutes playing the Jihadist card in 2015. He released them himself to gain support from the West in the civil-war.
