Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967 and effectively annexed it in 1981 through the Golan Heights Law. However, this annexation has not been recognized by the international community, which still considers the Golan Heights to be Syrian territory under Israeli occupation

Assad family has been a central part of the Ba'ath Party in Syria. The Ba'ath Party, which promotes Arab unity and socialism, came to power in Syria in 1963. Hafez al-Assad seized control in a 1970 coup and established a repressive regime. More secular than religious.

@CapeCodSully I agree, Israel should maintain control. I'd like to go skiing on Mt Hermon myself. I was stating a fact, that's all. The new flag of Syria and the HST call for the liberation of the Greater Levant, that includes Israel. Tough times ahead. Everything we are now being told is pure al-Taqiyya which is permitted by Sharia Law in times of war and oppression. The new Black strip on the Syrian flag represents the oppression of the Arab people. We in the West, and I'm a native Californian, are still ignorant of the Levant.

@debravictoria7452 March 2019, President Trump declared that it was time to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967 Trump did not "give" away the Golan Heights. He stated an opinion, one I agree with.

al-Julani's real name is Ahmed Hussein al-Shar'a. His father was an operative in the PLO after being displaced in the 1967 war. The family is from the Golan Heights.
