As of 2016, The United States has proven reserves equivalent to 4.9 times its annual consumption. This means that, without imports, there would be about 5 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).

@GraysonKade No, Oil reserves are an estimate of the amount of crude oil located in a particular economic region. To qualify, oil reserves must have the potential of being extracted under current technological constraints. Reserves are calculated based on a proven/probable basis, meaning oil pools situated in unattainable depths, for example, would not be considered part of a nation's reserves.

@GraysonKade BTW, I once lived on top of Signal Hill in California, and was surrounded by pumpers and rigs. I'm now within view of offshore rigs in Long Beach, CA. Yes, Santa Barbara Channel has a natural seep of tons of oil every day into the Pacific Ocean, let's tap it, and frack for more. Energy is security, it's just that FOX did not give a clear picture of what's going on, not at all, nor does CNN, we're not being well served.
