Francis Collins, the then Director of the NIH, ran the smear campaign, not Fauci, who mostly covered his butt with collogues, just as he did 40 years ago during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and why Gregg Gonsalves evoked the memory of AIDS Activist Larry Krammer in the email thread. The "collusion" has a long history, and someone will write a book about it, I'm sure. Collins retired with a nice pension, his last interview was full of snide sarcasm and giggles. Collins is the greater villain in the story.
