  1. I believe Orwell was speaking of the Power of Agency, Free Will, which you had to give up in order to gain the security of the state from the enemy. This is regardless of political, social, or religious framework, all of which use the carrot of security against a perceived enemy to coerce you to hand over your free will. The humans in 1984 are miserable because they have sold their free will, their Power of Agency, to the State.

  2. Yes, the reporters have sold their free will to a stated and dogmatic collective ideology. They no longer have to think, they no longer have the power of agency to do so, they gave it up.

  3. Oceania was created as the result of an anti-Capitalist revolution, and 85% of Oceania's population is Prole, "Proletariat". The nations of 1984 all act in the same way, using fear of the A-Bomb to coerce the majority into giving up the Power of Agency in exchange for a perceived safety from an external enemy. All three nations of 1984 use the same tactic, regardless of their political framework. Sorry, guys, don't think you got that part. Check out Christopher Hitchens on the subject.
