  1. Garcia was my Mayor, I took pictures of him with Drag Queens at the press release for our Rainbow Crosswalks. Hamburger Mary's is his constituency, but you may be surprised that in college he headed the Young Republicans and interned for the George W. Bush presidential campaign. He knows how to wring votes out of my neighborhood, but he also works well with the Port of Long Beach/LA and business leaders. He's a pragmatic politician based on the realities of California voters. I don't like living in an ideological ghetto, which my town has become, but love the beach.

  2. Ironically, when the new rainbow crosswalks were unveiled by the then Mayor Garcia, he invited Drag Queens to the press conference to walk the crosswalks. After the event, on Facebook, the Drag Queens started a feud complaining that all variations of drag queens were not invited. It was hilarious, apparently Garcia didn't invite a trans drag queen of color to the event, and the feud went off the rails and the thread deleted. Few understand what this life is really like.

  3. In college Garcia was the president of the Young Republicans, but he knew he would never be elected Mayor as GOP, so he flipped, became my Mayor, and is now my congressman.
