Khashoggi was tied to the Saudi royal family, was more spy than journalist, and write op ed and propaganda pieces for them before turning on his former employer. The issue is why he was killed by the Saudi Royal family, it was not because he was an "activist" or "journalist", it's because he was a spy who broke his oath, like a mafia hitman who testified to the Feds.
