US is the currency reserve for the world, that is not ending anytime soon. "Morally" is subjective.

Puerto Rico does have representation Puerto Rico has a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives called the Resident Commissioner. The Resident Commissioner represents Puerto Rico in Congress and can serve on committees, participate in debates, and introduce legislation, but cannot vote on the House floor. As of January 3, 2025, the current Resident Commissioner is Pablo José Hernández Rivera.

@dm4713 "unchecked"? Our system is designed with checks and balances. Already court cases working both sides. What are you talking about?

The 31st Vice-President of the United States was "aboriginal", a member of the Kaw Tribe, the first person of color in the Executive Branch, not Kamala Harris.

@DominicPaz **1954 United States Capitol shooting**. On March 1, 1954, four members of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, led by Lolita Lebrón, attacked the U.S. Capitol. They fired shots from the Ladies' Gallery of the House of Representatives, wounding five members of Congress. Their goal was to draw attention to the cause of Puerto Rican independence. The attackers were arrested, tried, and convicted, receiving long prison sentences. In 1978 and 1979, their sentences were commuted by President Jimmy Carter.

@nigelgarrett7970 They are not a State, they can vote to become one, but have not chosen to do so. Why?

@nigelgarrett7970 No, I am not familiar with them, let me do a quick check: Date: The referendum was held on November 3, 2020, concurrently with the general election in the United States. Results: Yes: 655,505 votes (52.52%) No: 592,671 votes (47.48%) Voting Options: Statehood: Becoming the 51st state of the United States. Independence: Becoming a fully independent nation. Free Association: Establishing a form of independence while maintaining some association with the United States. Results: Statehood: Approximately 58.6% of the votes. Free Association: Approximately 29.6% of the votes. Independence: Approximately 11.8% of the votes.

@nigelgarrett7970 Looks like a simple majority wants statehood but the vote is non-binding, requires a vote by US Congress. My point of view would be at least a 2/3 majority would be compelling enough to maybe move the US Congress. Also appears there's support for independence.

@nigelgarrett7970 Was not on my radar, thanks for the info. Why not go indie?

@kvabskalle "what you are saying". I've not said anything other than I'm learning about what Puerto Ricans want. When I look at the issue, the population of PR is 3.5 million while Greenland only has about 55,000. Although PR is not a "state" they are American citizens and receive $10bn each year from the Fed Government. Greenland does not have to become a "State", but could align in someway that would move the two of us closer together. I support the Monroe Doctrine and like to see it extend to Greenland and the North Pole.
