Section 185 of the German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch - StGB) addresses the offense of insult. Under this law, insulting another person is considered a criminal offense and is punishable by a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year. If the insult is committed publicly, in a meeting, by disseminating content, or by means of an assault, the penalty can be imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or a fine. Insults can take various forms, including spoken words, written statements, or even gestures like showing the middle finger or spitting on someone.

Section 185 is newly expanded. However, general rudeness or tactlessness is not sufficient to be considered an insult under this law.

@smallpeople172 I'm not a German citizen, and have no voice in the law, just reporting the fact of the law. America has a different framework and culture when it comes to the expression of thought and action.

@johnma5915 Section 185 has roots in earlier law but is updated to include social media formats and the advent of memes.

@llh3025 US and Weimar Germany don't share political, cultural or historical framework to make the analogy work. It's nonsense.
