  1. "false consensus" has origin in "false consciousness", but you can reach much further back to Socrates, "An Unexamined Life is Not Worth Living". However, there's a high cost to self-examination, most people will not pay the price, and prefer to appropriate the consensus consciousness.

  2.  @monsta6144  I did not say "all", but "most". Human history clearly shows it is not an assumption. "Intelligence", whether intellectual or emotional, is variable, as is the distribution of the Big 5 personality traits in a given population. The salient point I wished to make was "self-exploration" is expensive, it requires Type 1 thinking, your brain is actually burning calories while doing it. So even from an evolutionary biology perspective, it's expensive, and it may actually be more "intelligent" not to do it, depending on the circumstances.
