The key here is what the president of a nation can and cannot do by the virtue of their position. I don't know how much power Estonian Presidents hold, but if it is largely a ceremonial figure with diplomatic (foreign) oriented political power, it could easily be selected by the populous. However, this can be kept under check by some rules as to who can run for it. For example, it could be that every party larger than X% of the parliament (not too big to have just 1 but not too small to just let anyone form a party for the sole purpose of presidential election... Dno 20%?) Would need to propose a candidate out of which people can select. I mean, there is a diverse array of countries with differently empowered presidents selected by the people. It just needs to be looked at.
