  1. From what I understand it's about size and global influence which ultimately give this war the "major war" classification. Not the the Balkan wars are not horrible but when we compare them globally, they didn't have that much effect and it was among a countries that came from one nation. On the other hand, Russia is a major power and Ukraine is a major world food supplier. The war started years after separation, thus both were fully sovereign and Ukraine also has a lot larger population.
