My dad (Okinawa) gave me Winterbottom's book on the code war not too long after it was published in paperback.

I grew up in the 50s. You either were a tube guy back then or didn't do electronics. I remember looking forward to the increasing f sub t for hobby transistors. I started with the CK722.

I have watched computers since January 1975. The thrill of the early days is unmatched. Just look at the 'advanced' computer screen used in Star Wars. It was state of the art (for the public).

The MOSFET was invented in 1925. The basic principle of the field-effect transistor was first patented by Julius Edgar Lilienfeld in 1925. It was reduced to practice in 1960.

When RCA came out with the CD4000 series gates it was considered kind of a joke. They were slow and excessively vulnerable to destruction by static charges. We are past all that. The improved CD4000 series is out there and there is the 74LVC series which has as much drive power as TTL. All CMOS.

Try $3,000 for a desktop in 1976. Without a screen. The LPC1115 has 64K ROM (flash) and 8K of RAM for about $8. It also includes a UART, I2C and SPI bus and counter timers. Of course you need a board and a couple of other chips for interface. And a power supply of 5V @ 20 mA. About $35 for a system that once took a big box and boards ($5K total) and a 5V 25Amp power supply.

The 5U4 was never put in a metal envelope. And then came the 1N4006. The 5U4 was no longer necessary.

These devices are now in every kitchen in America thanks to Raytheon.
