Power switching speed, losses, and voltage capability are way more important to power conversion. Material changes have influence as well. SiC is up and coming.

  3.  @xiaohu3859  Power losses over distance are the actual factor limiting transmission distance. Phase is a local condition when it comes to attaching power sources to the grid. As long as you match locally when connecting - slightly fast, slightly higher voltage, close the breakers as the phase is matched - everything is fine. All cores have losses. The bigger the core the lower the loss ratio for a given power.
