Climate goals can never be reached. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas equal to CO2 according to theory. There is on average 50 times as much in the atmosphere as CO2. There are still no proposals for draining the oceans. Water vapor is not persistent? According to the theory water vapor's lack of persistence in the atmosphere (rain) means WV only counts for heating, not for evaporating more water vapor. Which is absurd because heating causes evaporation.

Solar without batteries is undispatchable. With batteries it is unaffordable.

With renewables that will only be true for 10 or 15 years after manufacture.

@peteglass3496 ' progress is accelerating." No doubt. But CO2 is a propaganda problem. And subsidies mean the roll out is inefficient. There is no rush. The GHG most likely to destroy the planet is water vapor. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas equal to CO2 according to theory. There is on average 50 times as much in the atmosphere as CO2. And when that all stops at once sometimes for weeks - where will the electricity come from? Nukes in Idaho?

@stevechance150 They store high temperature. Not too good for electricity. And who needs heat in the summer?
1
@georgewarriner4017 True. But very little transportation when the grid needs the electricity.

AE without batteries is not dispatchable. With batteries it is not affordable. How big a battery do you need to carry summer wind into winter? You can't afford it. Where will the metal come from? You can't afford it.

@stevechance150 Ever try to get electricity from a thermal battery?
1
@georgewarriner4017 "there will be more than enough battery backup." As long as transportation isn't required.

@willm5814 Summer vs winter will require even more buffering. Which would you prefer - farming or batteries?
