I was a Naval Nuke. The heat transfer problems are intense. The cladding problems are intense. The radiation problems are intense. And I barely got a taste of that (enough to be an operator).

@ddopson I'm older than transistors. Growing up I heard of them but never had any experience with them until the CK722 came out. It had an ft (f sub t) of about 600KHz - Not good enough for a superhet AM radio. Good as an audio amp. A decade and a half later I was working at Raytheon Computer testing TTL chips. Designed the IO board that went into the world's first BBS. A heck of a ride.

At least a hundred thousand breakthroughs in a vast number of fields were required. A LOT of 100W soldering irons and lab techs.
