@MnemonicHack Made in Japan = Made in China, Until the 1980s and Edward Deming taking hold. I'm older than transistors. As an E. engineer at that time I helped American industry get back on track.

@charlesharper2357 Very nice. Except I actually lived through the era and before about 1980 Japan had the same reputation for quality as China does now. Read the history of Edward Deming - quality Japan. It will corroborate what I have said re-Japanese manufacturing quality. The rise of Japanese quality spurred the Americans. I participated in that. I'm older than transistors.

@bobwatson8754 Yes. I did a gig at Motorola during the era (different Chicago area plant). We all were TQM and MTBF crazy. "Beat the Japanese" was on everyone's mind.

@charlesharper2357 None the less in 1975 Japanese reputation for quality was just starting to rise in America. Japan's reputation for quality (cheap Japanese junk) was common. "Made for each other, Made in Japan" was an epithet. By 1980 American attitudes changed. If my memory serves of course.

@charlesharper2357 Well, all I can tell you is what I remember from the period. Japan was known for cheap Japanese junk until about the mid 70s. By 1980 the old reputation was mostly gore. I was an EE in American industry at the time. Japan forced us to get obsessed with TQM and MTBF. Because we had ignored our own guy - Deming.
