This happens when you do poor planning. Build large cities and factories on fertile soil and leave desert for agriculture. 🙈

@user-ze3jk2iu1x Good summary 👍 Something similar happened in a small scale on the Pacific Island of Nauru. In 1970s it had world's second highest GDP per capita of $50,000 due to export of phosphates.( First was Saudi Arabia) In 1990s the deposits of phosphates run out and the life standards plummeted, GDP per capita shrunk to only $2,500, central bank went insolvent and the island was left impoverished with uneducated, unemployed population, with high rate of obesity and environmental damage. Saudi Arabia is heading similar way. MBS seems to try to implement some reforms and diversify the economy. He's planning the futuristic city of Neom with free economic zone in Gulf of Acaba. But I cannot evaluate how much of it is a genuine effort to reform and gow much is just a show. Emirates on the other hand made a progress, there economy doesn't stand on oil anymore.

Yes, Norway is going the right direction. It is an extremely lucky and rich country so they can afford the transition. They have oil, gas and other minerals, fish, timber, great tourist potential and massive hydroelectric potential which guarantees them cheap abundant energy. Other countries are not so lucky so the transition will take them longer. Germany is an example of country that goes completely wrong direction. They got rid of their nuclear plants because of scaremongering campaigns from NGOs (sponsored without a doubt by Russia and Oil and Gas lobby). Now the conflict in Ukraine showed their strategic vulnerability in dependence on Russian gas. Also the pollution and carbon footprint of Germany's energy sector is much higher than one of nuclear France.

Carrying capacity can be (and is already) greatly extended through technology. The Earth can only bear units or low tens of millions of hunter-gatherers. Today's enormous population of 8 bn is only possible thanks to industrial agriculture. High yield varieties, fertilizers, pesticides, use of diesel powered agricultural machinery, massive storage and ocean shipping of goods. Also modern healthcare, vaccination, hygiene and use of abundant cheap energy. If any of these support is removed, good population will be in trouble.

@dutchrjen Well said 👍 But I would include: Pros. 12. US is the only marine superpower, it has a strong blue Water Navy and an ability to project military power anywhere in the world. No other country possesses navy of that scale and this gives the US monopole similar to that Great Britain enjoyed in 18th century. Cons: 6. Loss of faith and value crisis. More and more Americans have "I can't be bothered attitude" or they hate their country and it's founding values. Instead of trying to reform and solve its problems they try to actively bring it down. Left wing media constantly exaggerate America's problems, labeling it as racist, bigot, bla bla bla. But this narrative is now widespread and taught in schools and only will get worse. No other country in the world has the ability to defeat US. There are only three possible scenarios how the the US could be challenged and existentially threated. a. New superower emerging on Eurasian continent. Not likely, the US won't allow it to happen. b. Attack by a strong decentralised group, Al Quaida style. Not likely. c. Collapse from inside, civil war, large scale unrests, economic collapse. Quite likely.

@wolfdreams1545 Yes, water rights will become an issue in the future. How much water each country can use. Turkey vs. Iraq, Ethiopia vs. Egypt, USA vs. Mexico, Fergana valley in central Asia, ....

Swedish support for Kurds and particularly Palestinians is a disgrace 👎

Yes, all that is true. But every coin has two sides . If it was not the US, somebody else would support them. Earlier the Soviet Union, in todays world probably China. Also other oil rich countries cause problems and produce terrorists. Iran is a biggest supporter of hezbollah, Lybia, Algeria and Iraq . None of them was US ally. 1. Origin of Islamic state is in Iraq. This organisation was formed from former government officials in a Saddam Hussein's government. 2. Yes, absolutely. 3. Osama bin Laden actually strongly opposed the Saudi regime backed by Americans. His goal was to create an Islamic caliphate and the US simply stood in his way. 4. Opec is an energy cartel. Controlling oil prices is its main purpose. 5. The uncontrolled war in Yemen is a disgrace for all involved and for the West.
