@JumpstylA78Cooling of the reactors is done by electric pumps = it's silent. Everything can be made silent apart from diesel engines, which are noisy by their nature. You never can completely silence vibrations from moving pistons, explosions inside cylinders.

I think the US should develop cheap drone platform with a very long range capable of launching cruise missiles or dropping bombs and use them in large numbers. They need to improve protection of the aircraft carriers against saturation missile attacks.

@Coles1.25LPepsi A submarine doesn't have to surface completely, all it needs is to get air through the snorkel to run the engines. Snorkel is very hard to detect on a radar because of its size. Also the exhaust gases can be cooled down to avoid detection by thermal sensors on planes and satellites. The biggest problem is noise, sound waves travel exceptionally well underwater and can be detected at a great distance.

@jakemocci3953 That's true. But the range on electric power is limited. They need to recharge batteries with the diesel engine which makes them prone to detection. Submarine needs to be quiet all the time. Some Swedish designs use quiet Stirling engine instead of noisy diesel to circumvent this problem.

@Ramschat yes technically it is a diesel engine, but it is of a completely different design without noisy pistons, conrods and crankshaft
