Maybe conservatives need to take inspiration from history? Gay people used to be totally excluded from being able to talk openly about their lives, look at them now! Similarly look at how far racial minorities have come in moving from being excluded from mainstream platforms to being accepted in all walks of life Conservatives should learn from the examples of other marginalised groups, the roadmap is there to be open and proud about who you are!

@Saoirse_don_Phalaistín what if it isn't a choice? Would neurodiversity be a better example? As an example to learn from politically it's not been as strong as other campaigns, but it highlights that how you think isn't entirely a conscious choice

@Moleena I don't know about that one. What was said?

@Moleena That is a very interesting case. I don't want to put words in her mouth, but I would suspect she grew up worrying she'd face barriers because she's a lesbian, but instead he is being marginalised for being conservative Is it presumptious to assume that she should know more than most about how to achieve acceptance than most, as she has already been there before?

@Saoirse_don_Phalaistín neurodiversity is literally different ways of thinking! How else could you define it? And for what it's worth, the causality is home ownership and having children. People with houses and kids trend more conservative regardless of age, and if you're old with neither you tend to stay radical. Was Thatcher a genius or just lucky when she gave lots of people a chance to buy houses on the cheap?

@Saoirse_don_Phalaistín would religion be a better analogy? You might be getting the wrong end of the stick a bit though, apologies if my focus was unclear. My argument is not that the characteristics are directly comparable, rather that there are numerous examples of political campaigns and social activism that achieved greater levels of acceptance for groups who previously were actively excluded Conservatives could learn from all those fine examples rather than whining about it and expecting someone else to do the work for them!

@Saoirse_don_Phalaistín we are getting deep into psychology and philosophy now, but if you believe your outlook to be fixed and unchangeable, how different is that to a born characteristic? And if that's too highbrow, on a more practical level, we have a section of society who are struggling to come to terms with their place in the modern world. I am just hoping to give them something more constructive to do than mope and whine about how they feel right now!

@Saoirse_don_Phalaistín I am enjoying this discussion, it is very enlightening! Again, all I hoped to achieve is to give people who are struggling emotionally a starting point to engage constructively with the rest of society. If I gain and learn from this discussion, that's a bonus!
