There's an argument he could have done more to reduce our exposure, but he couldn't have prevented it - only American policy could do that

@UtubeRwokeLefties don't remember this happening in my lifetime. Labour have been a bit happy to let the private sector take excessive profits out of public services, but there hasn't been a Labour-triggered financial crisis in the 4-odd decades I've been alive

@UtubeRwokeLefties that was an American crisis that the UK got caught up in

Because without it, we don't have a currency
1
@edwardmclaughlin7935 you could rename/reinvent it, but something has to be the issuer of currency. If not the BoE, then something that's effectively the BoE under a different name

Don't see anything wrong with devolution - central control is notoriously blind to the detail required to manage anything other than broad, high level policy
1
@arthurdixon5890 is this not an inevitable result of out-of-touch policies from a remote and out-of-touch centralised government?
1
@arthurdixon5890 I agree we need devolved governments in England, too - Westminster is just too remote to know what problems need solving outside of Knightsbridge and Chelsea
1
@arthurdixon5890 but united doesn't mean blanket one-size-fits-none policies. It should be about sharing efforts that benefit from being done at scale, while tailoring everything else to local needs
1
@arthurdixon5890 even if you have a perfect constituency MP, you still have the one-size-fits-none problem. Your MP has to find a compromise with every other constituency MP for the national policy, rather than each region adapting to local needs
1
@arthurdixon5890 that seems like a very extreme take on togetherness - community is about connection, not conformity. The high modernist standardisation from above mindset fails every time it is tried - the only question is whether it fails gently or catastrophically
