  1. It makes a massive difference! There's all sorts of loopholes available to shareholders that people earning a wage can't take advantage of. Lots of high earners take a (relatively) low wage but have big share payouts from the company they own/work for. That's basic tax avoidance. When you're rich enough to have a dedicated accountant, you can have shell companies set up so your company and earnings are in a country you've never set foot in and barely pay any tax at all The source of your earnings makes a huge difference!

  2. From a cynical finance angle, it could still be an investment that pays off with other policy decisions elsewhere. Maybe some cosy government contracts for firms they own are coming soon?

  3. Looking after people can be hard. If you can instead just take a cushy second job, phone in your MP responsibilities, and still get re-elected, why change that habit of a lifetime?
