@tonygange7636 we are staying because we love our country and won't let the people trying to turn us into Zimbabwe on Thames get away with it
16
@newblackdog7827 why? We were an influential part of one of the big players on the international stage! Now we are a small island on the outside of everything 🙁
15
To everyone saying "we just like the trade", would you be happy with being in the customs union and single market without a set at the table setting the regulations for that market?
7
@Iazzaboyce there will always be problems to address, but I am not aware of anything existential inside the EU
6
@tonygange7636 and there it is. When I think Zimbabwe, I think infamous economic basket case. When you think Zimbabwe you think skin colour
5
@LS-xs7sg oddly enough, I agree, yet that's why I support the EU. Hedge funds and other global efforts aren't going to go away, so they need a democratic counterbalance. The EU is the most successful model yet achieved for democracy on a scale big enough to push back against multinational agents
5
@LS-xs7sg if that's what you want, then you need to get organised, because you have a lot of gaps to plug! We don't grow enough food to be self sufficient, we don't export much, and financial and legal services are moving away because we are on the wrong side of all the regulatory barriers. You up for fixing all that?
4
@jasonkingshott2971 yes! Would you accept the trade access, but all the trading regulations are set for us with no seat for us at the table?
4
@oweng7987 Brexit was leaving a trade bloc. Trade is about as economics-y as can be!
4
@oweng7987 A Yorkshire parish Council isn't going to be able to have a meaningful negotiation with an American multinational The EU can That's the heart of my answer. Local government for local issues, big collective government when you need big, collective weight
4
@jasonkingshott2971 so if we are part of the Single Market, we should expect our seats at the table to decide the regulations of the Single Market?
3
@oweng7987 I find that Westminster is the worst of both worlds. It's just big enough to be remote and out of touch on local issues, but also too small to have real weight on international affairs The size of our economy is deceptive, too. Yes, a lot of money flows through this country, but a lot of it flows through global companies. It passes through our country, but it is never ours 🙁
3
@ameliecarre4783 got to ask! Maybe the answer will be no, but it will be a no that comes with a roadmap of how to get to yes The sooner we ask, the sooner we can start working on the requirements
2
@oweng7987 it is true that trade is complex and fuzzy! Take the war in Ukraine - there, trade policy and military policy have become deeply interconnected. You can't have a common trade policy without some willingness to coordinate on all the other areas of policy that influence trade TLDR - together is stronger. If it works for trade, let's try it in other areas too!
2
@oweng7987 I entirely agree that we need to hold any government we elect responsible and accountable. If we're not reminding them that we are watching, then they will ignore us. Democracy is for life, not just for polling day!

@thegrandmuftiofwakanda are those the figures that don't account for inflation, and that are padded by some very shortsighted sales of natural gas?
2
Has it though? The Tories just looked to Asian visas instead of the single market. Given the rising wages and standard of living in Eastern Europe, the Tories would probably be doing that, even if we stayed in the EU
1
@msa-tt4bg there's always going to be a squeeze on wages, unless you have large numbers of people willing to stand up and ask where all the profits are going
1
There was a Brexiteer faction who wanted Brexit so they could deregulate and drop taxes. That's the faction Truss and Kwarteng represent, and they got to implement their grand vision The rest of this story, you already know!
1
@johnhickton7944 History isn't over. I have a brighter, happier future to look forward to, when we Rejoin the greatest family of nations the world has ever known 🙂
1
@vanrutgar6536 the dream is to be a happy, prosperous nation. Money isn't everything, but it's going to be hard to achieve if we're collectively skint!
1
@thegrandmuftiofwakanda everything is better as a team. Agriculture will benefit, manufacturing will benefit, financial and legal will benefit... it's hard to find a line of work that doesn't benefit from working together with no barriers between us However you earn a living, whatever you want to do, it's easier inside. Why would you want to be alone and cut off?
1
@thegrandmuftiofwakanda yes, there's other nations out there, including some big, powerful ones that are very much looking after themselves. How do you think negotiations between lonely UK and America, or China are going to go? Inside the EU we can sit at the table. Outside, we will just be told to sit
1
@johnhickton7944 Italy does have a lot of fraud and corruption, but that's an Italian issue, not an EU-wide one!
1
@benfulford3943 oh yes, we must never forget all the newspapers and thinktanks who hailed Truss and Kwarteng as the greatest thing ever... until it exploded Next time any of those newspapers and thinktanks hail their new greatest thing ever, let's all remember Trussonomics
1
@wanderer1955 The EU thinks the Tories are a joke, not the UK. The Tories are a sick joke, one that isn't very funny
