Are full-style espresso machines such a rare thing in USA ? Pads and Pods like Nespresso, Senseo whatever have cheap machines of $80 instead of $300, but it's both not for the poor, and why not having a fresh grinded coffee cup by cup ? Who goes for this intermediate quality of buying pre-ground coffee, but packed per serving ? Does this belong to some kind of Yuppie-Lifestyle ? I cannot find any logical reason to use such a thing.

I'm wondered why this isn't the default !? Are these capsule and pad things really such a big hype in US ? I mean, yes you save $200 on the machine in first place, but than you pay double the price for the coffee. People cannot be that stupid.

May depend on the way you are going with beans. I mean the grinding takes about 5 seconds extra, but the rest is the same. You can also have convenience with beans, if you just buy a machine with a built in grinder.

But it needs clients stupid enough to fall for such advertisement. Yes, the coffee is nice, but it costs the double than mede in a different way and it produces so much garbage. It's the same as making you believe Coke is the best Cola in the world. Pure marketing. Selling a lifestyle.

I feel exotic, with a coffee machine that I fill with beans and water. Yes it's $300 or so, but beans are quiet cheap, quality is high, no garbage.

From economical point of view, the printers should be more expensive. Or maybe technology is so long used, any developing cost is already re-financed, maybe they now don't need the money from the ink and they have a "green" reason to sell it.

But what's the advantage of pods and capsulas, compared to a machine with grinder and brewer ? They became cheap nowadays the same. Pods is an intermediate thing for people who cannot afford a grinder. But it's not for poor people. I bought an automat for about $300, put beans and water in, press a button, that's it. What advantage does anybody has with pods? Machine is cheaper, coffee is double as expensive.

@FranFerioli Yes, for rare use it might be OK. I have about 4 cups per day, that's about one pound coffee per 2weeks, and this is about half price of capsules. So after a year or so its already paid. There is also nothing complicated to handle. The water you have to provide either way. Beans are pretty clean, easy to add, and only every 20 cup or so. Taking out the leftovers is also the same, no matter if capsules or not. yes ok, the trash container you have to clean once in a while. Footprint is about a letter size sheet of paper. The boss should bring the espresso maker in the office, doesn't he ? As well as a microwave and a fridge ? Isn't this normal office equipment ? Most have it for clients anyway and the employees are just allowed to use it. I was just astonished how many seem to use this capsule thing from the comments.

@FranFerioli OK thanks. I'm German and actually haven't seen anybody using them at home or in the office. They might have a bad image, besides the price, and they were an intermediate solution maybe 10-15 years ago, before the grinding/brewing automats became so cheap (about 300€). Yesterday I was in a Toyota service station, they had such a thing for clients and workers, every little bakery or gas station has it - in different sizes. And the quality of coffee mainly depends on the beans, not on the machine. The old alternative are filtered coffee, where you make a huge jar at a time, but they are going to be extinguished sooner or later.

Isn't this the default, to have ceramic cups ? Are not dishwashers made to clean them ?

It's comfort. Nothing else. It's expensive, it's producing lot of garbage. But if people are willing to pay - all you can do to make them aware to know what they do. It's always the same scheme of cheap machine/high price per product, or expensive machine/low price per product. Coffee Pods, Inkjet cartridge, razor blades .. everywhere the same.
