@andypham1636 No that's not really a reason, in 500 languages in the world, there are no easy names. A rename from Joseph to Benedict is not really simpler to speak, and from Karol to Ioannis neither. If a country cannot pronounce Ioannis, they simply call him John.

Nice story, I just don't get why you do this research, why you search a religion for you ? It's like reading "Harry Potter" and starting a discussion whether it could be reality. Or taking several fictional book and choose one world to live in. Might be a nice mindgame, but not more.

Good questions. Without contact to search, you cannot become religious by yourself I would say. It's always encouraged through "teachers" only.

Most of us are related. Just most people don't have notices about their anchestry up to medeval. One marriage and you link the anchestry of 1000 people or more together.

Unfortunatly the discussion here is: How not beeing raised in church (by atheists) does effect your life. I would say, not doing anything not talking about anything, cannot have any effect.

In every other country in the world, nobody would care for the family, and publishing such a chart would even infringe privacy laws. In any case, it's yellow press and gossip, to know such things. The achievements of a person do not depend on the achievements of grandparents or children. As well as discredits of family members, do not harm the credits of family members. Unless it's an ancient archaic society base on honor and dishonor of the reputation of the family.

@robertmiller9735 Don't understand your reaction. Scammers ? Money ? What ? Was just wondering how you can choose to be a humanist, if you are forced to be a humanist by law anyway. You are forced to not kill people, to not steel, that's humanism. You are also forced to help the poor by paying taxes and so on. We have to be human. If we are not human and rape, kill, steal, we end in prison. Outside USA, even "failure to provide assistance" is a delict. That's watching without helping.

@robertmiller9735 OK, maybe I lost thread, but there was definitly nothing about liberal christians in your post. The "wellbeeing" of sentient creatures, is 100% part of law (maybe not in USA). There are animal protection laws, laws for people without income, care for sick people etc, care for homeless. etc. Everything interpersonal I would call friendliness and courtesy. Something we all practice. Don't know what humanism could add on top. If philosophers just gave this behaviour a name, OK. A sadist would disqualify for humanism.

@adamc1694 You can call it proposition, you can also call it a brainwash. If nobody comes up with the idea, you don't even start to think about it. The question is not coming up by itself, only other humans can provide you with their fantasy.

On Jews it's kind of an exception, cause the word is also used in an ethnic way. It's the only religion designated to one people only. "Secular Christians" is a term we don't use, cause it doesn't exist. You are a french/german/english Atheist, that's going to work. There is part of religion that have been incorporated into culture. I celebrate christmas, but I'm not christian. It's just a holiday with the family, with trees and candles. Same meaning as Thanksgiving for others.

Didn't he cover them as the "implicit atheist". Actually not caring and not knowing anything. But your are right, becoming religious later on is quiet rare. But it's the same kind of people who change to Buddhism or something in older age.

Why you call it a belief ? If I think there are no aliens on earth, I can believe it. If I don't think about the existence of aliens, I have no belief and especially it's technically completly impossible to talk about it. Cause the thought is not in your head. But your statement is mainly correct. To me, if one tells me he believes in god, I deal it the same way as a Trekkie or a fan of Harry Potter. But since I know he is more serious, it's more like "what a jerk/fool/idiot".

@lars_larsen If you don't want to answer a question stay silent. You would appear more polite. You don't have to blame people for not having listened carefully, or missunderstanding something, or not understanding something due to language skills. If I don't understand something somebody said, I ask. That's how I'm educated. "fascinated, and with childish curiosity" was the answer I found. And there is an ongoing doubt between, "it does not exists" .. but under some conditions maybe it could. Maybe you haven't found your answer yet. Of course our understanding of the world is incomplete, and it always will be. That's the reason why we do research. As more questions we solve as more questions coming up. The question to "why haven't we been able to build a nuclear fusion power statition" is for sure nur "a higher power, god in heaven, doesn't want us to do it, and is preventing it". It's just about the ability to unanswered question. Religious people cannot stand "We don't know". That's why they "invent" an answer, like "God knows why". It's their shortcut to research. It makes them sleep better.

You cannot get an open mind as a gift. You are born this way, everbody is. Everything parents do, all your education, is framing. Implanting a mindset. Which is not bad in general, you have to learn about good and bad. But the open mind is lost day by day you learn. The first opinion of your own, means cutting options, deny other opinions.

Atheists are not just denying god. They don't understand how one can come up with a question or the idea, whether such a thing exists. There is not enough indication, just for the assumption. It's like doing research on "Does an Alligator with a giraffes head exist". Why should one do this research ? Where should this idea come from ? You think "it's a stupid question " and don't waste time with it.

There is the status of "why is is worth to think about this question". It's a denying position in a way "it's not worth thinking about it". And that is how we are born. The question is not coming up by itself, you cannot conclude the question just by observing or thinking. You need people to come up with the idea. You are not born with a blank opinion on "Does Harry Potter exist". You cannot think this thought without ever having heard of Harry Potter. There is a difference between an empty box, and a non-existing box. A non-existing box cannot be empty.

@alexandradautriche2221 I thought so too, but when it came to relations to Ukraine and the CIA, and conspiracy theories, this is far beyond biology or "documentation", this is politically biased. This "what they are known for" is always opinion-based, cause one is pointing out the good sides, others the bad sides. It's not like an actor, when they say "known for Movie A, B, or C".

No, that's exactly what it is. You need a reason why to establish an assumption, why to ask a question. If this initial sparkle is missing, you don't even think about it. It's like one asks you for the existence of lizard people (reptiloids). The reaction is, the one who is asking is mentally disturbed. You don't think about it at all. (of course it's implicit denial, but you deny already the question asked).

You are biased by the culture you are living in. You can accept your culture, without excepting the existance of a god. I'm atheist in Europe and I celebrate christmas. But every religious link on christmas is lost. It's a family event.

What Americans often underestimate, is their differences to almost any other country, in political and religious aspects. So for psychological research many questions can be answered, just by looking into other countries.

If everybody understands something else by atheism, they just cannot talk about it together. Actually I don't get your usage of "believe". I know there are no aliens on earth, there is no god, there is no living dinosaur, whatever. Cause there is not the smallest indication to establish an assumption of this kind. If you just believe it, it means you are open to change your mind ? When I believe 2+2=4, it means I'm not sure about it. So you are not sure ?

Seems to be the new entertainment thing is USA, to have their DNA tested. Nobody is questioning how the results are computed. How have the found DNA samples of people living around 1800 in Poland or Norway.Only material from before traveling age, the railway, can be used for such an origin.
