No, there is hotwater, coldwater, dumpwater, as easy to connect as a hose in the garden. You don't even need tools, or just for the last turn maybe. Installing a stove is as complicated as running an iron. You plug it in. For the oven you have extra high voltage sometimes, and you need an electrician for 10minutes, but most moving companies do this aside.

Sounds like third world, or emerging country, to have power outages, to a german. Germans also used gas, but for a much simpler reason: Is was there before electricity. Gas was available since 1850, electricity started 1890-1900. Today it's mainly for camping only. Propane BBQ gained popularity in the last years (as American style copy). But not replacing electric ones, it's replacing charcoal.

Same in Germany. Just the kitchen is screwed as much as your Sofa (not at all). Cupboards hanging on the wall like pictures. And you can take away your pictures, can't you. If people want to have gas, they had to buy their propane in bottles. Gas in the appartment was common maybe 1860-1960, it's not built in today any more.

But people replace the fridge, cause newer once use only 50% of electricity. So to keep the old ones running, is the most stupid thing they could do. But they do.

So with invention of induction, every advantage is gone.

That's really gone since long time. The little heaters were a quick&dirty installations on old houses, maybe if they had coal heating in the 70ies. But since than, every house went through a makeover, usually every 50 years.

@Wud-f2r I see. We don't even have drywall, the tubes are put into the concrete, all you get is three wholes in the wall, 2 for hot and cold water with a little tap, which roughly defines the sink position. Like the downpipe from the gutter,drain tubes are just sticked into each other, no thread or anything, just an overlapp, and since water flows downwards not upwards the connection is not water proof. Like a funnel on a pot. If the pot has a whole overflow is impossible. But it's all just developed habits. Some people would like to rent with a kitchen, but if available it's a surcharge. So you pay it one way or the other. Selling from one renter to the next is also an option.

@Wud-f2r I've seen this in movies. Drywall we use only when dividing big rooms in smaller ones. Only inside. In the mideval we also used the wooden frames. Today only the roof is made of timber.

But wooden tops, in stone or even metal design is still quiet common. Chipboard is absolute default, even when woolden design. It's more or less just fotos of materials.

How can you evaluate "easier" if you haven't tried anything else ? On induction you see "a pott on the stove could be hot", no pott on the stove - definitly no heat. Very easy to see with your eyes. It's a little like you say, mail on paper is better cause you can really see it, while for email you need an app to check it.

@Marcel_Audubon including induction ? Since natural gas in the pipelines and a prohibition of gas bottles in appartments, it's almost completly gone in germany. The biggest contra is the cleaning. Glas really is the preference.

But this only makes sense to U.S. if it's separated from the living area. Of course you had to do it on the dining table, and some had it in the kitchen, others in the living room, some had two.

Actualy, I would consider the double sink the default in the last 50years, and conversion to single is the new change in the last years. Even my auntie with a kitchen from 1920 had a double sink built in. It's always one filled with water, the other to catch dripping washed dishes.

@eDoc2020 a grill is the dirtiest thing you can imagine. Nobody wants this in the kitchen. And while a gas often has only bottom heat, electric has top and bottom. That's more often needed. Not to forget the danger of open fire, as Feli noticed. No wonder you glorify fire fighters, you really need them.

@brettbuck7362 if you don't include the 10.000 $ extra to have it installed in your house or the extra cost to buy it in bottles, maybe. Maybe you can save by using gaslight too😉

@alexphillips4325 In don't see any dependency between remoteness and electricity. Maybe an earthquake destroys a cable, or the wildlife is destroying it ? I think Gas in US is more a matter of heating. In warm parts, you only need small central heating devices, and you can run them on bottled propane if you like. This was never an option in Germany, it's way to expensive and incoformatable. I grow up with a propane stove in the kitchen, buying bottles once a month, but the demand was so low over time, they stopped selling such stoves.

@alexphillips4325 I know these containers, most often outside the house, you see them here too, from time to time. But since it's a pressurized system, people prefer oil, if they have no pipeline. I never ever talked about electric heating, this is kind of inaffordable, 4 times more expensive, but it changes now, by raising oil price and the heat pump, making electricity 4 times as efficient, as it was before. There was just a huge discussion in politics, since 2024 installment of new oil, gas and coal heating is prohibited, for climate protection. Just checked statistics for stoves in Germany: 94% electric, 6% gas. And for stoves only, they have these 20 Liter (5 gallon) bottles next to the stove, good for 4-6weeks. That's like for camping.

The cold room is more common towards Austria in southern Germany, it's farmhouse design, to have so much space. There it's also common to have a "dirty bath" next to the back entry, when coming from the farmside, and a nicer bath next to the living area.

Yes, but they are influenced by war times, or the possibility of empty or closed shops. They had other habits to storage.

This is, if renters, not owners decide about the kitchen, they decide if they replace the old one or not. People go to IKEA and can only buy what they offer. "Country-style" is rather a newer fashion, may from 1990-2010. Before it was with orange-greeny-plastic look from the 70ies. My kitchen is 5 years old, it's woulden but in concrete look.

But kitchen is not fixed. The only connection to the wall maybe the hanging cabinets, but you hang them like pictures. Do you call a bathtub "furnishing" ? Cause the German/Norway Möbel/møbel, french meuble, explicitly means "mobile".

@Wud-f2r who is " our" and why you are telling stories about bathtubs. This is about the kitchen, and the kitchen sink is part of moveable furniture.

@Wud-f2r oh really, couldn't recall my thought from months ago. All the confusion is based on the idea connecting hoses is anything complicated. Well, some people need help to connect a TV also. What about dishwasher, nobody is replacing one themselves?

@Wud-f2r a pressureless drain pipe is just sticking to tubes into each other. A toddler has more complicated games to play. And in the garden all people connect their hose to the tap themselves. Nobody would call this an Installation. No glue, no Tools. However, moving the kitchen just became a habit. Maybe it's some touch of individuality, cause you live there for 10 years, or 40 years. Germans move less. My neighbor just moved from appartement to a house. He brought his kitchen, bought an extra cupboard from ikea to extend the kitchen to the larger space and it looks like made to fit.

@ThatGirlJD Yes, many people do this, but it's like avoiding buying a new fridge for 200€, while needing an extra of 100€ for the eletricity to run the old one. It costs more money to use the old than it would be if buying a new device. It's more significant where energy costs are high. "Fridge Rotation" is like burning money in your fireplace. (I do the same, but I turn it on, only if I have a party in summer or so, 10 days per year.).

It might be a matter of indivuality, like the rest of your furniture. You can pick your own design, you don't have to refuse the kitchen, cause it's styles in 80ies dark oak cupboards bundled with shiny red tiles from the 80ies. I guess in switzlerland it's high class, the demand to want something "better" might be low, or in reverse, the demand to want it cheaper is low. The kitchen can make a difference of 100€/month in the price of the appartment, if it's a 12.000€ kitchen, replaced after 10 years, to keep up with design. Especially for people who cannot design their house, at least they can design the kitchen.

What's the difference to the crane at your sink ? It's a cold water dispenser. And to cool a drink, you put a buttle inside the fridge. You don't put ice-cubes in the drink; which is no accepted solution for wine and beer anyway.

I bet the cabinets are all rectangular, not using your pentagonal space fully, you have to get a new countertop somewhere else, but can reuse everything.

Energy is expensive, so to have 3 freezers really only make sense to freeze your own products. There are really people, who buy products to freeze them, to use bargains. This hardly ever pays off.

Cleanliness has the idea of invisible/empty/uniform, to a German. Too many materials combined hurt the eye.

@leDespicable Integrated is also recent, just started maybe late 90ies. But even if not integrated, it had the same dimension as the cabinets, you had a flat front. Oven, fridge, Cabinet come in standard size (of 60x60x72cm). It's like playing Lego.

I need about 2 liters per month (about half a gallon). I put it in the coffee, sometimes in pastry.

@lijohnyoutube101 You can't evey say, if you consider it good or bad, you just say "go read" ? Europeans usually eat way more cheese, so their dairy intake isn't lost, if they don't drink it. Cookies, as well as potato chips are more in the category of popcorn, more like soul food, nothing you eat cause you are hungry, not even as a snack. Have a banana, as a snack.
