  4.  @a.r.r.i.9841  This must be america, if you get in the wrong bus in Germany, you would never end up at another school, but at the zoo or the supermarket or whereever. And if the kid handles to correct his mistake himself somehow, maybe it can read google maps, or the schedule of the bus, with age 10 , it's 4th grade ? It will become very proud and get confidence in himself, to have "survived" this adventure. The only one noticing this thing, would be his school, for arriving late.

  5. Depends on the distance to your job, but yes, starting 6am is quiet normal, und people are happy to come home 3pm and have the rest of the day off.

  9. No, this is just your evaluation. Beeing direct is extremly friendly, you are not wasting anybodies time. You can values this as positive, or miss the sugar coating and consider it negative. It's a matter of culture, what you are annoyed by. Also Envy can go into to directions, you can say "I want to have this too" or you can say "I don't like the other one to have it". Germans tend to tear others down to gain equality. All having nothing is easier to achieve than all having a lot. It's self destructive but that's the way it is. It's explaining things, not valueing things as positive. Germans like to explain. This is different from excusing. If you want to change anything, you need to explain why it is as it is.

  10. I'm bamboozled with your statement. Cause "soup and cake" might be the American or French version, having cake as desert. The german tradition is, to separate this into two meals. Cake is no desert in any way , unless they try to mimic american tradition.

  12. No, that's completly impossible. Remember around 1990, there have been about 7% immigrants. So if maybe 2% of those immigrants marry Germans, you got 2% of these marriages. A term like "interracial" does not exist, the term race is not used at all. You marry a foreigner, that's exotic enough, if it's one from denmark or nigeria doesn't make a difference, it's rare. With 2nd/3rd generations, and an immagration background rate of 25% today, it's becoming more common. but still less than 10% I guess. The question is Turkish or Danish a race, we don't want to discuss or answer in Germany. It's common knowledge to say "There are no human races".

  17.  @haych27  I said, the condition to be hungry is dinner time. Not eating for over 12hours could be considered intermittent fasting already. If you are having a midnight snack or dinner 10pm , of course this can replace breakfast.

  18. It's the essential part of any family celebration. So normal, people don't even talk about it. The habit of having storages, some took over, but that's mainly an import. Besides the wedding cake , you normally have 20 other cakes. So everybody can find something they like. Germans are picky with their cake, It's about taste, while American cakes seem to be about decoration only. And the cake is a meal by itself. Around 4pm, like English tea time. It's not a desert, people are hungry, it's a meal.

  20. Once I had a big discussion with Canadians, who did not expect me to categorize an apple pie as cake. We could find common ground on Strudel. But it's an underestimated false friend, to translate Kuchen with cake or vice versa. And what the french call a tarte, is a pie in English, but not Torte in German. Only common thing: it's round. Now what about Blechkuchen ? People are lost.

  22. Right. Some compare women average to mens average to produce big numbers. Of course you have to compare payment for same job and the same time, which is much less difference, more dependending on requesting less payment when negotiating your salery. Very normal worldwide.

  23. Germans just realize, it doesn't make any difference to have a marriage certifcate or not, except for taxes. People just move together in the same appartment, may have kids, and no marriage is necessary. Unless you got some religious burdon, who declares this shameful.

I'm scientist, I think about why things are as they are. Your "it is as it is" is too simple for me, cause it just omits the "why". Yes you can say "Some people die on cancer, others don't. Some people just die, it's that simple". I'm just more curious.

Normal risk of life, like walking along a street. Or taking a flight. Nothing related to playgrounds at all. Kids need to try how body reacts, to gravitation or balance or whatever. If they fall , they should fall soft, that's why it's often mulch on the ground. This changes a broken leg into a hematoma maybe. No need for a doctor. That's OK. It's correct, parents go more often to see the doctor, cause they feel insecure, but this is not a reason to take more risks.

  27.  @christianedoeur9394  I was talking about deserts (two courses), not sweet meals. That's more something like Kompott or Pudding. And the extra afternoon cake meal. In contradiction, since the other nations don't have the afternoon meal, their only chance to have cake is desert time. So they have it only after lunch or dinner, which for Germans is still an exception, even if you have examples. I have heared, a bakery in Germany is producing the cakes for Germany bigger than for France, cause Germans have bigger servings (cause it's a meal 4 hours after lunch), and for French it's a small desert.

It's normal people don't take all their vacation, some in a sense of duty to their company, or just having fun working, others in saving their days to take 2months off next year. Meaning of vacation is to recover. That's why the employer insists in taking it, rather than paying you. They prevent you harm yourself.

  32. That's the attribute of "home cooking", and having it daily. Take 5 ingredients, produce something in 20minutes + baking time. Of course french patisserie is "more refined" but for no purpose and nobody is doing it at home. The worst are the americans, if they talk about cake, they don't care about baking at all. It's a nightmare of sugar, called Fondant decorated by crazy people - but not bakers.

  40. It's not a favourite vegatable, but it's almost the only seasonal vegetable. So you are happy when the season comes. The Germans eat much more carrots, but they are available all your around, no reason to celebrate their arrival.

  43. School is very much like this. Never overtime and punctual.but this is worldwide. Nothing special to germany. And Feierabend is more the begin of spare time. Literally it means partynight.

  44.  @fbabarbe430  I don't notice people working long hourse/overtimes as a massive problem. In some special industries, with leak of workers, yes. Actually you underline the urge of wanting more skilled workers, instead of having the existing workers, work harder. They just realize the point of people need sleep and a rest and time for the family. In some branches it works even the reverse way: people say: we don't want more salery, we want more colleagues, to do the job. People don't urge for highest payment, if they have enough, they reduce hours to enjoy life. That's the message of the video.

  48. Addiction comes from the combination of fat + sugar. It's easy to separate, especially in German cakes. Either you make a dough without fat, like brioche, or you reduce the sugar and take fruits only. The only combination are crumbs, but they are used in small quantities, just for the crunch and the caramel taste.
