@runningfromabear8354 It's a bit like todays Germans talk to the Amish. It's kind of a window into history, a copy of 1860 or so. Of course history took different paths, depending on the point they separated. But I think they still have a right to claim to have a german heritage.

@runningfromabear8354 Yes, and among Americans it's completly OK. Just if foreigners, real Scots, are involved, they should get more precise or explicit. It's OK to claim heritage, but to use the words "I am" for this, is strange for some people. "I'm of scottish heritage" is completly fine. It's like if doctors talk to each other , they use different language, than with patients ;-) No, words have not one specific precise meaning, meaning depends on context. Words change meaning over time and regional. British ENglish and American English is sometimes considered two languages. One say truck, the other lorry. One write color, the other colour. And it's a mutual process to understand each other. It's not "one is right, and the other has to agree".

But if they define their language in a way "german" means "German-American" then everything is fine ;-) The other people are called "German, from Germany". A more complicated expression, but since it's less often topic while talking, it's OK to take the longer form for the rare need. Americans are allowed to define the meaning of their language. They also always say "Berlin, Germany" to not get mixed with "Berlin , New Hempshire". Just "Berlin" is probably meaningless without context - to Americans.

@urlauburlaub2222 Socialist has different meaning in English and German, or at least for US people. In German it's a difference to be social or a socialist. social (sozial) is the opposite of egoistic in German. "Gemeinsinn"/"Gemeinwohl" are unknown terms in US. While social in English means something like "party-People", beeing in contact with other people but NOT taking responsibility. Simple unemployment or retirement insurance, is already "socialst" for US people. There is absolutly no intension by any party or the population to get rid of social insurances. What US have are volounteers, but's that nothing anybody can rely on.

There is just a lot of competition, for the American doing a 10 way vacation to Europe, it will never be on the schedule, unless he has special interest. But it's not like the "wonderful massiv central" in France or the carpatian mountains in Romania is rated higher, if we compare in international measure. Inside Germany, the South dominates the North, except the coastline, nobody can compete with Bavaria. It's more South vs. North, than East vs. West. Hannover is not really a hotspot.

@monikadeinbeck4760 The expression German-American fullfills your requests, doesn't it ? You don't want them to switch from boiled potatoes to french fries, or things like that, they are allowed to eat like your grandma. So why should they make a secret about their heritage. It's too often a topic among Americans, you are right, but if you have a huge group of people, you look for a smaller group to belong to. Maybe heritage does unite people somehow. (Same as beeing born in the same city is) Recently a black women told me, in a room with mainly white people, she feels immediatly familiar with another black person in the room, cause she knows , they have some (experiences) in common.

@mrechbreger You are just egoistic and non-solidaric. If you have a high income you pay a high rate, this is the price to finance lower rates, for people with lower income. If you made $5000 and paid $720/only $300 from those 5000. Be happy about it. If would be worse, if somebody with an income of $900 had to pay $700 and this is what people might read from your statements. If you get unemployed or on pension, your healtcare rate will lower too. This is a huge security factor. You never pay more, than you actually have. It's like with taxes. If you pay a lot, you are happy to have a high income.

@runningfromabear8354 Due to missing transport, there never was much migration, or once every 1000 years, you have a big shift. Vikings (Normans) arrived to Britain around year 500, French around your 1000. Period . No immigration until 1935, some refugees from World War II. It is all very recent, air-planes are available just since 60 years, that's not even 3 generations. Single individuals travelling and staying is nothing to experience migration. They will always integrate fast. But if the come in larger groups, they bring their communities, traditions, they might found their own village at a new place. America and Australia is a big exception, cause it was (almost) empty place to fill. Completly different from integrating new people into an existing society. I am European, and I tell you I saw the first black person personally in 1995. Before, there was one singer from Kuba on TV, and of course you got movies. But there was no movement. And if you pronounce European history, you might have heared of an Iron Curtain ? Not passable by people.

@runningfromabear8354 Before 1990 nobody ran, cause there was a wall, or an ircon curtain. No freedom to travel. I'm born in East Germany, and as I told you I haven't seen any non german before 1995. Only travel destination was Prague and Moscow, nobody moved their, was just to visit. And in Generations before, some left to Argentine or Brasil, but nobody came into the cities or villages. It was homogenous population. Jewes killd around 1940 you know, was even more homogenous after. It just changed in the last 30 years. And in Poland it hasn't changed at all. People left Germany always, they left, left, left, in each war, in the big depression, in 1860 towards America, the Amish left, but Germany was never a destination. It changed around 1960 with hired workforce from Italy and Turkey. That's the begin of Immigration history in Germany. It's very recent, just 3 generations ago. But a story of "there always was immigration " is simply nonsense. I think your logic is "I've seen something in one country, so it must be the same in any other country" ? Or is it "I have met an immigrant in London, so I can claim this as immigration to all of Europe" ?

@MarcLeonbacher-lb2oe Not by purpose, 3rd generation (grandchilds of immigrants) didn't found their grandparents language that useful. Why you should speak 2 languages, if you get along with one ?

But where is your knowledge coming from ? People not visiting, do not often make videos on why they not choose to visit. And Prague is more on the limit of overtourism.

Easier: You are willing to do something painful, if you are sure, everybody is following the painful rule. Like "Don't walk on the green". If everybody does it, it's OK for you. But only then.

East Germany is full of tourists. It's just most often not for your 2 weeks summer vacation, it's more for the 3 day weekend trip. On the baltic sea coast, there is rather no difference to the north sea coast. Hotel beds, have only a light correlation to tourism. If one has more businesses, if course you have more business travellors. Bremen has by far more business travellors than tourists, in reverse to Dresden, but statistics often don't reflect this. Something like AirBnB you skipped completly anyway, cause there are no numbers.

Creating more jobs and tourists is not wanted today any more. You can create a job, but you don't find people taking the job, business rather close down, due to leak of staff, not leak of customers. The world has changed in the last year.It's not always giving up business, but things like restaurants opening only 5 days per week, cause they can fill only one shift of staff.

If you are an exotic individual, people will watch you little longer. This might be the case if you come in a wheelchair, have only one arm, or dark skin, it's not seen 1000 times a day. But that's the case worldwide, and since ever and up to eternity. It's curiosity, not criminality. People will check you out, on your clothing or your haircut, to guess your income in a restaurant, maybe und differ the service (work the tip). But that's done worldwide.

@runningfromabear8354 No, nations without immigration don't have a understanding for this. It's more Ethnic vs. Citizenship. Or you can call it "cultural background". And if you immigrate, it's more expected to say goodbuy to your heritage, unless you are asked for your biography. But maybe it's the American habit of small talk, to permanently tell things, nobody asked for. A word might be used in different languages, like nationality, but it might differ in nuances in each language. Official terms is country with citizens. I'm starting to get unsure, what a nation is. Is it a synonym for country ? I think so.

@runningfromabear8354 europe hadn't for long time. In WWII nobody came, people only left. UK and france had first wave 1960 due to decoloniazation of Pakistan and algeria. For germany and sweden it startet in the 90ies from jugoslavia, in 2015 from syria. Poland has almost no Immigration up to today. Heritage and nationality is inseparable. It's the same for every person in the country . That's the biggest point against Migration. IT's the dehomogenization of population. Something completly unknown.

In older days, mainly agriculture based economies, long distance interaction was not necessary, but since invention of railway and cars, people traveled and mixed. The different groups traded products. NYC is called a melting pot for this reason. It has no advantage to keep up old culture, so why should they do it ? It's only nostalgia. And you see the success of USA, the melting and assimilation lead to a better result than Europe with 30 languages. Migrants to US are the risk taking people of Europe, while the risk averse staid in Europe.

That's just slawic neighbors on temporary shelter. Germans have been thrown out of the country to have a clean polish society in 1945. We were talking about Migration in the last 500 years. Main difference is, in Germany the cities existed first, the rules came later. Unlike USA, where many living areas have been developed in the last 100 years. The big importance of zoning comes to play, if agricultural land is upgraded to developed country. On such a decision, land becomes worth from 1€/m² to 200€/m² from one day to the next. So a lot of speculation is going on there.

This sounds a bit xenophobic, if you don't allow immigrants with citizenship, to call themselves American. Unless .. I'm not sure in which direction you see the cultural appropriation. It's kind of expectable immigrants didn't gave up their habits or food, when coming to US, and as more of them arrive in the same spot, as longer traditions are kept, cause you need a community for most habits. Additionally, people who don't have a history search for one. Since the 19th centure in US is rather skipped, with the slavery and genocide, it's not really something to be proud of, you rather take the imported history.

So there are countries left not familiar with immigration - this was your claim. And countries behind the iron curtain/eastern europe, is the best place for homogenous populations TODAY. What people migrated to Hungary or Poland in the last 300 years? Just let me know. Portuguese ? Or Chinese ? In Germany it started just 1990 with the war in Jugoslawia. Nobody went to Germany due to any war before, not WWI, oder WWII. Why you always come up with "european history" but you don't seem to know anything about it. You come up with your anonymous "people alsways move from everywhere to everywhere", which is Nonsense. People escaped from Europe due to repression and wars, they didn't go there (before 1960). Turks in Vienna 1683 might have been the last attempt - not successfull. I have no idea why and what you talk about Americans. You claimed "every country in the world". Coming back to the original question, this was just about, are they allowed to call themselve Swabians or Germans, without any prefix, like Danube- or Roman- or Banat- ? Only if they not got assimilated. But in USA assimilation rate is close to 100%. They loose the culture of their grandfathers. All they have is the knowledge to have a certain descent. I'm sure 50 generations back I derive from the old greek, I don't feel greek at all ;-) All of us are of African descent for sure, just 500.000 years ago.

Wir reden da von etwa 50.000 Personen bei etwa 30 Millionen Einwohnern. Die haben gar nicht die Macht etwas zu verändern. Friesen und Sorben sind die einzige Minderheit in Deutschland und die sind nichtmal eingewandert.

@OneTrueScotsman in the long run, yes. But people only remember only 2-3 generations back. And in the nation building process in 18th century, building of modern states, people got their identities. Who was in france 1789 is considered french, and who wasn't isn't. Germany came late with 1871. Before Germany didn't exist. It's younger than Canaria. In the last 200 years of capitalism, people only moved to find jobs. Coal mines where the biggest reason for that. But for Personal experience, especially on farmland, beeing the 7th Generation on the same plot is very normal. If you have germans in russia or romania, that's movements from 17th century. All movements after around 1850 was towards Amerika only, in parts towards argentine/ Uruguay , but mostly USA.

@hilpi75 Would be easy for you to name a paragraph claiming this, if it's the case. In German law there is generally no distinguishment, between "in public/at home". You can drink with 12 in public with parental supervision. The only one going to prison, is the salesperson, cashier or barkeeper, there are no laws for anybody else. Not for parents, not for kids. There are some laws restricting access to "public events", like a bar after 11pm. Maybe you mix this with "public". In American law, they distuinguish "visiblity to others". Something like this does not at all exist in Germany. Hiding isn't a solution to anything.

You are partially right, but the inner core is a different one. People want to be social with other people, beeing social means visiting each other, eating and drinking together. And to be hospitable you offer something good. I don't see much difference to france actually, daily aclohol with the meal is common to both countries, just wine doesn't seem to cause this "i want more" effect that much. Having water on the table is more common in France, that's all the difference I can see. Festivals are no "excuses" to drink. To search for an excuse you would need to feel guilty. This feeling does not exist at all. Some will excuse at their liver, but for who else you should need to excuse ?

This is a good and detailed portrait of the german system. The public healthcare is solidaric, you pay more, if you earn more, like you do with taxes. The private system is independent from income and more like in the US. But Germany pays a lot attention to distinguish in "medical necessary" and not necessary. So something like a single room in a hospital is not really helping you getting healthy. So there are rooms with 2 or 3 beds - never seen in any US hospital. Or before doing an expensive CT Scan, the german doctors has to think twice "is this necessary, is there a cheaper way to do diagnostics", while Americans sometimes tend do over-diagnose and make as many checks as possible. So maybe with beeing 500% more expensive, they get 5-10% more quality, for those who can afford it.

What is rather unknown to Germany, is the separation of appartment buildings and single family homes. It's both residential. There maybe regulations like the height of the buildings. But in general, you apply and wait for admission.

I think the number of people is simply too small. They didn't form communities in much places. So the heritage is lost fast.

That's why pure rye is rather rare used. It would fall apart, you always mix it with some wheat. Rye is cheaper, that's why people tried to use it.

@wildeast66 you sound more elaborate than just reflecting childhood memories ;-) Something grown local, is cheaper than something not grown local. I cannot follow your "not cheap" story. Wheat needs the best available soil to grow, it's more expensive. Today in supermarket it's the reverse , wheat is cheaper, cause of global trade and high competition. Germanies wheat consumption goes up due to migration of people and food. Pizza, Döner, Burger, Kebap bread, it's all wheat only.

@wildeast66 having more than one bread also started just 150 years ago. And import ment from 100km away, from areas with richer soil. Up to day, germany is self sufficient on wheat. It's not on oats , btw.

There is no common "resignation". Just a few people are upset and make a lot of noise around their emotions. Even in the largest economic boom, they would find something to complain, and deny to realize the optimistic mood of others. Just as you. "Employers don't find anybody to hire" means "Employees find jobs easily, don't have to afraid of loosing a job" .... how can they be depressed ? It's hard to get rid of this complaining mindset.

@cailwi9 I considered it synonym to the great depression of 1929 and didn't really understand, what difference you tried to explain. Loosing a job and feeling hopeless is the very same thing. Is there a great wave of people quitting their jobs themselve in USA, to find something better ? You kind of assume everybody knows what's going on in USA, and you just refer to this knowledge.

@AndrewMFAult Right, just their self-labeling is confusing people. And as born 1970 you are 5th generation and have 16 grandparents who migrated in 1870. It's very unlikely they are all from the same heritage. So actually it's an arbirtrary pick, which heritage they pronounce. And than is the simple difference between "I'm German(-American", to "I'm of German descent or heritage". One is false, One is true.

@GGysar Well, so I was supporting your idea, saying tourists don't think that's a third world country and avoid east Europe. Prague probably has more tourists than Nairobi. Why you keep continuing the idea of "missconceptions" ? Who has this and how have you found out about it ? What you want to happen , to have a proof this missconception doesn't exist ? I act like the cold war hasn't ended ? Are you nuts ? How did I gave you this impression ? It's just a bit this image of an undiscovered country, people don't know many neighbors who have been there. This needs more time. But on the other hand, more tourism is not urgently wanted or needed, it's too much already now in some places. So better don't advertise, if you don't want a second Barcelona. And whatever you do, Americans will hardly go and visit Liberec, as well as they don't visit Görlitz. Maybe if you tell them about Grand Budapest Hotel shoot in Görlitz, and Spiderman was shoot in Liberec, they would go. This creates some relation to the spots.

Life is risky. And it's kind of your own responsibility to take part in traffic on a bicycle, to go on a train ride unattended at 10 years, or just to use an escalator. You cannot protect people by prohibiting everything. It's like those helicopter parenting, forbidding their kids to climb a tree. They are rather becoming responsible adults by making experiences, than by doing nothing.

Well, we have to mention, Germany is offering this only to employees and younger people. This covers 95% of all. If you have not taken this offer, it can become a brainer for you.

@Doso777 It was not about having/not having insurance, It's about the insurance causing headakes or not. A person with private insurance, above 55 has no way to get into public health, A person below 55 hast to be an employee with "not too high" income, to be able to change to public health. And if you are stuck in this insurance, you are facing rates of €1000 and more - independent from your income. They introduced a "base service" for "only 500€, but that's still a lot if you try to live from 1000€.

Eigentlich ist es traurig, wenn wir niemanden ohne 10 Zertifikate und Diplome oder Abschlüsse arbeiten lassen. Deswegen gibts keine Krankenschwestern, Köche oder Programmierer, die bei uns einwandern. Es zählt nur die Aktenlage, nicht das Können.

@philippschmitz1787 Der Versuch ausländische Abschlüsse anzuerkennen, scheitert zu 83%. Und Einwanderung als Fachkraft, d.h. mit nachgewiesener Ausbildung, ist der einzige legale Weg. Bei Uni-Abschlüssen geht's meistens noch. Jeder bekommt bei uns nach 3 Jahren Ausbildung, nen Gesellenbrief, später evtl. nen Meisterbrief. Sowas gibts im Ausland kaum. Programmierer brauchen keinen digitalen Ausbau. Die schicken meist nur kleine Textmengen rum, wäre selten das hier jemand ne Streaming-Plattform entwickelt.

To invest time in such things, is a signal of a settled life, decent wealth. You don't need to hunt for food anymore, and want to spend your time useful somehow. Yes, in threat situation you look for friends, hence - without a threat you don't need to. If at all there is this black/white/asian division in US, still trying to become homogenous. The irish/scottish heritage, is yet another level.

And since the main emigration wave was 1850-1880, it has been the migrants itself keeping contact to their parents or siblings. Usually 3rd generation is loosing interest in contacts. You have no personal relation to the people there any more. You know there is an 4th degree cousin, which you never saw, that's like a nobody.

It's all paid by insurances and absolutly nothing is paid by the state, except this Hartz IV thing, this is tax-money. People are othen insurance holders and tax payers, and mix up who "the state" is, and who not.

@tudormiller887 It's not a product, it's a category. You won't find anything labeled "swiss cheese" or "Muesli" in a shelf. You find appenzeller, and emmentaler, or gruyere and so on. But it's like talking about italian cars, not caring if you have little Fiat 500 or Ferrari in mind. I see sometimes Americans putting "Swiss cheese" in a recipe, I would have no idea what type of cheese this is.

@ultimatewafflegaming1018 definitly not. Completly unknown, brought to germany by McDonald's in the 70ies. Never seen before. Beef is much too expensive, not for the common man, and germans put bread and eggs in their meatballs. The burger bun is a french brioche. The habit of Holding the meat with bread and eating without sitting down, might be the only german thing.

@mrechbreger It's as hard to divide sick people from simulants, of course there are ghost riders. Before governements existed, this was organized by the church, you made your donations for the poor. The question "what to you get back from the poor" is inhuman. The difference to taxes is, the donation is an obligation. I never heard people, the church is scamming them. With entrepreneurs you might mix something up. They do not have a monhtly income, they cannot pay a share of their income. So they pay a fixed amount of money, also if they have no income. This is the same, as you do in USA. Same is for retirement. How much you get in USA ? $0. There is no governemental plan. From this point of view, 50% is pretty much, the idea is, to have additional insurances, In USA you have to cover 100% or as much as you want, in Germany this private insurance should cover maybe 10-50%, or as much as you want. So 50% is base security, and more than nothing, isn't it. I'm an entrepeneur. I have nothing, and I'm unable to compute "50%" of my last income, cause it fluctuates from year to year anyway. On year 30K one year 80K. You don't adapt your Lifestyle to the 80K.

Wenn beim Bäcker vor dir 6 Mann anstehen, ärgerst Du dich auch dass Du lange warten muss. Und wenn dann noch einer reinkommt und sagt "Ich hab's eilig, lasst mich mal vor". dann ist das Verständnis nur gering, wenn Du dessen story nicht kennst. DIe hohe Auslastung von CT geräten ist ein Garant dafür, dass die so "billig" sind. Man könnte eventuell Termine nachts um 3 einführen, wenn man das noch verbessern wollte. Wenn Fälle unregelmäßig kommen, dann ist Warteschlangenbildung normal, die Entscheidung wann man wegen Warteschlangen die Kapazitäten erhöht ist schwierig. Denn Leerlauf darf auch nicht entstehen. Es darf nicht andersrum passieren, das man Leute nur scannt, damit die Geräte ausgelastet sind. Das ist zum Teil in den USA der Fall.

@DaDunge Maybe you don't know many cities. The railway station is a nightmare made of concrete, only the lake in the citiy is a highlight. It's like a small town, just bigger ;-)

Cause "Ausbildung" has no equivalent anywhere else. Ausbildung is 3 years, Bachelor is 2 years. Telling that to people they are confused, what is "more".

You talk about "Bachelor of Art", she was talking about "Bachelor", you are unaware of the differences. "Arts and Sciences" is the academic world. BA-Degree and Bachelor degree is not the same thing.....just in german the term is only used for the BA Or BSc.

@Atlantjan This is reverse logic , cause Bachelor degree in europe you can only aquire in universities. This does not really help to find a proper translation for Geselle. An American trade school is ending with just diploma or certificates, but it's only 9months education. So this is what EU needs to qualify as "not close to Bachelor". But a german trade school with 3 years of education might be termed Bachelor.

@Atlantjan But there is no other term in english. It's 4 times more intense than a trade school. Finishing school and Finishing high school is the very same thing in USA. There is no Abitur equivalent either. Leaving with 16 is a dropout. So in the age of 20, you can be Bachelor in any meaning. That's the common thing. You just discuss about, is it special or general education or academic or less academic. Apprenticeship can just mean "training on the job" or beeing a Trainee, it's not a fixed definition.

The countries in Africa did not exist, they are all defined by colonists, mainly after the slavery era. So you had to pick from maybe 2000 ethnic groups in Africa. And this knowledge got lost, cause the groups (the slaves) were all mixed from different origins. To maintain a culture you need a group of same people.

Do you see any action, any activity concerning alcohol ? Not advertising for it before 8pm, is the only change I have seen in the last 30 years. There is no "way" or any kind of trend.

No, you can't. That's more "having a relation to a topic". Like you like horror movies, and science-fiction movies, it's not mutual exclusive. But it's not your identity. If at all, the exact combination of both makes your identity. To me it sounds like having two personalities - Jekyll and Hide or so - this is not healthy ;-)

@Belgarion2601 I just missed any argument, why you could have multiple identities. Having knowledge, like studying a culture in university is really not enough for identity. And with 8 grand grand parents, you can have 8 identities ? To me it's one new mixed identity. You claim, there is no mixing.

@Belgarion2601 You don't stick to identities, but change to terms like nationality or person definition. For me, it's one person definition per person. That's what I call identity. Nationality can hold different concepts, like citizenship or ethnicity. Mostly it's also only one per person.

I think Americans travel more, I recently heard of one flying to college, east to west coast. It's just not international. Imagine Germany as New York State, some beaches, some skiing resorts; but mainly people leave the 'state' for vacation, visits and business. Within 5 hours drive by car I could reach 5 different European countries.

But there is a rumor about Bill Gates in Germany, he couldn't have founded Microsoft in his garage, cause a garage is windowless and hence not allowed as a working place. So the "non-industrial" use of homes, isn't that strict in USA either.

We cannot make laws to prevent people harming themselves. It's not a nanny-state. Difference on minors is just, they are underage - too stupid to decide for themselve in harsh words. That's why they are also not allowed to vote. But as for any problem of minors, it's the parents responsible to supervise.

So in the same sense , there are no "Americans" ? The topic is not ethnicity, it's identity. And with 300 years heritage, it's really enough to say "I'm from here" - not from somewhere else. Otherwise we all have to say, we derive from Lucy in the great african rift. Or from the phoenicians. It's completly arbritrary to fix your identity by "where lived my grandman in the year 1500".
