  1.  @drh3b  I had to google for baloney and 1000 islands. Actually germans are big bread eaters, but it's actually only bread with one (one!) topping. Mainly cheese or cold cuts. Maybe this is, cause cheese or meat is more tasty ? When I have a nice smoked ham, I want to have the taste from the smoked meat and don't modify it with any sauce. There are people who already adopted this American habit, but they are not really considered gourmets. A sausage has to taste by itself. On a tasteless sausage you can put mustard.

  2.  @hussein-irak  Right, but you got clothes, food and architecture adapted to that. For you, the culture shock would be snow. And I say culture, cause society isn't used to that.

  3. Well, sitting in cold houses in winter, or beeing unable to produce glas we use as kind of excuse. The (green) ministery of economy just announced to come back to coal instead of gas, for a while.

  4. That's a common problem in many cultures. They create laws, but don't obey them as long as "it's behind closed doors". Italians and Latinos are great in this attitude. And if nobody cares anyway, there is no pressure changing laws.

  6.  @Thorfinn47.  But it sounds kind of inpolite, if you have claims. Just telling you it's a difference from having this a few days vs. all year around. Yesterday we had 38 today 22. It's not always this hard contrast, but you get time to recover by nature itself. Especially nights at 14-18 are normal, this is enough to cool down the house.

  8.  @Kinestezja  Technically, expecting a country without huge harbours to import oil or gas, is silly. What people want to do and what they actually do, is not always the same thing. So in reverse, you cannot conclude, people like to do, what they do.

  9. On hot pasta, it will become hot ketchup by itself. But it will cool down the pasta.

  10.  @drh3b  Americans in emergency, and people who cannot cook. The funpart in this story is to expect, there is always ketchup in the house. Maybe that gag is lost by adding this 'hot'. Actually warming is cultureful, maybe an Italian would do, in courtesy to the pasta, if there are no tomatoes around. Nalf is italian American. I have no ketchup, I would have pesto, when I'm not up for cooking. Ketchup isn't good for anything, with some more spices you can turn it into a dip for your sausages, but mainly, it's too sweet.

  11.  @dookiepost  i said in emergeny. If Ketchup is the only thing in the fridge. Ketchup is often there for french fries or bbq. Of cause you can buy special sauces for any dish.

  12. The sauce on pasta is usually warm. If there is nothing else available - in worst case, and as an american or a poor student, you just heat ketchup.

  13.  @chrisk5651  I don't recommend it. I just say the idea is not so strange. A sauce is not a soup. Well for BBQ you need some smoked pepper and you got something. Since ketchup is usually more liquid, I would cook it to get some water out, that's called reduction. As I said, this is emergency cooking if you have nothing in your house, not the normal way.

  15. If you consider yourself as normal, everything different from you appears to be weird. The chance you have is not considering yourself as the default. Then "weird" changes to "different".
