Sorry, that's bullshit. Of course there are some brands people knew from TV, like Levis Jeans or so, what they wanted to buy. But it's not like they had not clothes or lived in poverty or anything. USA defines what's in fashion, of course anybody else is behind. So it also was common, to keep houses in plain concrete. The habit of painting houses came later. Of course it looked more grey, but people were used to it.

@eugenohanka No, it wasn't. Everybody had enough to eat, to dress, and a home to live in. People had less choices, fashion clothes where hard to get, and maybe instead of Filet mignon you had gulash, but there was enough of everything for everybody, thats the base idea of communism. Just beeing indidividual was kind of exhausting or annoying. (Owning less is not poverty. Absolute Poverty is not having enough to exist, Relative poverty is having less than your neighbors. Both didn't exist. People just had less assets, like cars).

Too much details for americans. They use the term socialism for todays western Europe, cause they got social benefits. So communism is close to what they mean.

It's just another border. The distance to russia didn't change at all.

Relating to the iron curtain, and dividing the world in east and west, it was east. As east as east-germany was.

But it's a bad example for staying together. We have to admit. Spain is less peaceful - but still together. So what to prefer ?
1
Maybe before WWII. After 1945 there is no "German sphere of influence".
1
So what's the difference to not breaking up ? Cause both stay single after separation. What do you gain ?
1
But if nobody feels suppressed, why split ? Smaller units are always less important and have a harder life. Next step is splitting czechs from moravia .. very peacefully, just because they want it ?
1
That's todays nationalistic Hungarian policy.
1
Same is for the 50states of USA, artificially constructed, culturally different, but they decided to go together cause bigger is better.
1
For the people it's easy, it's Czechs. For the country you are right. But maybe this is only a problem in other languages.
1
No, that's impossible. Communism is "the same for all", it cannot handle individualism. That's why is must always fail. The basic theory is "everybody needs the same - and gets the same". But you can make it appear democratic by brainwash 20-30% in doubt, and put 1% in prison. So the rest is uniformed opinion. Well, you can observe in china. Governement change by voting will not happen. It does not make any sense in the communist idea. You just mix political models and econonmical models. Communism covers both, Facism only politics.

This gives no clue at all, why they wanted to separate.
1
Yes, if separation: this way. But still. Why separation ? It's completly meaningless
1
@bogdanpopescu1401 Yes, in some aspects, like for the local mayor. But it's definitly an advantage to have common rules and standards, even when you drive 200km. That's the idea of the Eurpoean Union. You get the possibility to vote different. If You make poll on abortion in czechia and slovakia, und both polls have the same result - than separation was meaningless, it doesn't change anything. Only difference I know, Slowakia has the Euro, Czechia hasn't. They voted to say no. Do they gain anything with that ?
