I grew up in a coed and pretty progressive community and sports was compulsory part of our carriculum. Girls and boys competed together and we played sports like: soccer, volley ball, basket ball, cross country, heptathlon, decathlon, hockey, boxing, judo, swimming etc.
Girls and boys played together since kindergarted, but after the age of 16 we had to have seperate groups. One or two girls lasted with the guys till 17-18 but after that the difference was too great the guys were too fast, too strong. Even the brave girls themselves opted to go back to the all girls teams. Not because they hated us guys, we were still great friends but they understood the differences and accepted it.
One observation from my experience: most girls were slightly better than average guys as long distance running and swimming, but never better than the best guys though. Girls in average seemed to have slightly more stamina than average guys, boys are better sprinters.
