Food is a small cost for the average consumer, being only around 15% of average income. With the rich that is far, far less. They don't care if food costs triple, nor energy prices. Only the poor are affected by increase food costs. Gates has no intention in farming hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland. That idea is preposterous, nor would if you did the same, be able to do the immense work required to produce a sizeable yield. Who imports food in large quantities? Not the USA, but China and India. THEY need vast amounts of food and energy. If farming for food was the goal, China would have bought our farmland years ago. No, the reason he's buying is not to farm... but to store his wealth. Dollars indeed are being devalued, and his exchanging of them for land.. productive land is (drum roll please) something that he learned from WARREN BUFFET. That's a common theme of his investment philosophy. I might add that Con agra, and other mega grain producers also would have bought up farming land at these low lending rates, if food was the issue. Besides he owns LOTS of other NON agricultural land as well.
