@Jondsmusic I hope you're right. Trump wants to announce that "HE" pulled off a miracle, with the election coming up. Xi must be under pressure, and most likely wants to come home with a win. But, remember how things looked with Trump in North Korea too? All smiles and handshakes that resulted in nothing. We'll have to wait and see.

@Jondsmusic Sure! Catch a thief and what happens? He loses! Here's what you need to know... The USA has a JUDEO-CHRISTIAN sensibility about them. Fair play. Do unto others. Not that they don't abandon that with zeal if the opportunity exists, but generally, we like to sit down, negotiate, and find middle ground. The Chinese don't tho k that way. POWER is paramount. They see the one with the power, getting the lions share, and the other poor slob, just getting the crumbs that are tossed to him. It's only now, that Trump has put the pliers to their balls, that they're willing to accept compromise. They NEVER compromise with a winning hand. Why would they? That's the way that they view the world.

@Jondsmusic I don't know about that. It's how you define "debt".. Sure we owe 22 trillion. But, what about the untold trillions due coming down the road in social security, Medicare, and medicaid payments? If they have public suffering, there's mumbles of complaint. If we have public suffering, there's a riot. They don't worry about losing the election, do they? When THEY control the media, they control the masses. Here, they find a few homeless (less than one percent) and make it front page news. China doesn't have that problem. Sure, it may be hurting, but they CAN'T be seen as buckling to the USA. Pride and "face" is everything in Chinese culture. They will shoot themselves in the foot, before they feel shamed on the world stage. Do they want an agreement? Yes. Will they re-do all the machinations and criminality that has gotten them so far, so fast? That remains to be seen. I say they make promises. Trump calls it a win. Xi calls it a win... Then they go on cheating and lying, copying and stealing, as usual.

@Jondsmusic The forty could be correct, as I've pointed out. Debt is not only current debt, but future obligation as well. In the other hand, the Chinese debt is just speculation. Our debt is pretty easy to determine. Who knows what theirs is? When you have total economic power. When you don't only make the law, but ARE the law, when the media can easily be used to put the blame on your adversary (ie the USA) the people can be made to bear anything. Not so in the USA. And therein lies the difference. It's not the amount of debt that's the issue. It's the management of it. They can always announce that they are doing wonderful!
