Let's start with getting a new roof, which is HIGHLY recommended, before installing solar panels, THEN let's compare that $10,000 which was invested five years ago, and is now worth $17,000. Isn't it cheaper to spend a few hundred on more efficient bulbs, appliances, tv's, and turn off lights when not needed?
