You go on and on about the impotence of men who want to express themselves through violence but your main concern here is trying to prove your superiority to faceless strangers with the verbal (textual) equivalent. I was in a "Fight Club" as a teenager. Yes, it was puerile and pretty foolish but at the time it was something that connected with me far deeper than any of the seemingly meaningless shit that was getting thrown at me. When you've got so many people hassling you over your education choices, what job you're gonna do, the importance of toeing the line, the supposed responsibilities you need to be getting ready for which seemed (and some of it still does) like a load of horse-shit. I just wanted to feel alive. Vital. In the moment. In years since I've learned many better ways of achieving that feeling but there's a purity in violence, there's no denying that. Especially when there's no agenda behind it. You're not fighting for anything. Not even pride. You're just using every ounce of your fibre and honing your mind down to a focused point. I'd like you to explain more your criticisms that it's a story for people who've never had to face real hardship or work. Because with what you've given so far it seems like you just want to use that as a weak reason to denigrate people you don't approve of. You kinda sound like a Tory, mate...

Actually there has been a lot of investigation into such medication in recent years and evidence is mounting that shows that the negative effects often outweigh the positive and many, many cases of people being prescribed something totally inappropriate for their condition. It seems more and more often that GPs will prescribe generic medications rather than working with a person to get to the root of their issues. Corporations are getting rich off of other people's mental health issues.

  3. Bugs me that sensitivity and over-defensive attitudes means it's somewhat taboo to discuss the fact that the character of Rose was terribly written and badly acted. I don't really know much about the degree of hate directed at the actor, only that it was a thing and must have been relatively substantial. Sure, that sucks. But given how much the scenes between her and Finn made me regret every penny spent in seeing that movie, I think it's something that should be open to criticism.

  26. Víctor Barraza But is it fair to lump anyone who doesn't care for censorship of language into an "anti-PC movement"? I check my language primarily for myself, not for others. So I have limited truck with the concept of PC language. At the same time I'm not "anti" anything. I'm not going out of my way to oppose how other people want to do it. There are some vehment arseholes out there, I agree. But I think most people aren't "anti". They just don't want to be told what they can say or what they mean by someone else. Which... seems quite fair.

I'm saying that in some quarters there are people more interested in quibbling terms than seeking actual solutions. It's got nothing to do with people actually being hostile towards immigration, that comes from somewhere else. I'm saying that the idea of political correctness feels like it's been carried past the point of simply being considerate and respectful of others. It's become anally retentive.

I think it's come from a variety of factors though, not just one, and I think a key factor in why PC has been pushed, certainly in my lifetime, is that it makes a very useful political weapon. Particularly because it doesn't look or seem like it should be a weapon at all. It's my belief that the most fundamental struggle between humans is one of class. That is, there is a ruling class and then there is everyone else. The ruling class use and encourage divisive mentalities. If we are hating each other because of birthplace, sexuality, even just purely ideological reasons... then we are distracted and occupied. And PC has resulted in this incredible ability to dissuade discussion on these social matters. Accusations of sexism, racism, bigotry on any level, can be absolutely fatal to people's careers, their public standing and credibility whether they're borne out or not. As a result so many people are hesitant to voice their thoughts on the matter in fear of the repercussions. There's no movement, no discussion. This is particularly harmful in situations where the accusations had some merit to them because those are the situations that desperately need to be examined and discussed. You nailed it yourself. "Limitations". I feel that PC has gone too far, it's reached a point where it limits us from actually dealing with the underlying causes. There's another problem with the same limitations but in a different context. Whether we like it or not (personally I don't) I've learned the hard way that people aren't happy being told how to conduct themselves. They HAVE to come to it of their own volition. That doesn't mean you should just leave them to it, prod and encourage by all means. But using limitations to force compliance... that will be perceived as metaphorical chains and will only harden any cynical, regressive ideas that person might harbour.

Or when Affleck tried to shut down discussion with Sam Harris using accusations of "racism" when Harris was talking about religion. Or Dawkins being disallowed from attending an atheism conference because he re-tweeted some dumb SyeTenAtheist video (a similar thing almost happened to Bill Maher after the previous example went down on his show but the petition failed). Milo Yiannopolous had a speech at Rutgers university disrupted by protesters who didn't approve of his anti-feminism stance. And there was all that shit recently with Shapiro in LA. Repressing discussion, for any reason, represses progress on the matters.

  44. I think this 'need' for characters to be relatable is flawed. Most of us live relatively narrow lives. Dumbing characters down to fit into that narrow perspective results in a lot of generic, dull characters. Why should we be able to relate to a character like Superman? Why is that important? Rather than have characters who expand our world views we instead get ones who pander to them.

  46. While I am sometimes baffled by a biopic or period piece fabricating events... in many cases the truth would make for a more interesting story... I think ultimately we as consumers need to take responsibility for our education in this regard, we should be inspired by the historical fiction to go and research and learn all the details, the truth of the matter, for ourselves. If the creators can encourage their audience, remind them that this is BASED on a true story but that they should go and read up on the source material, then all for the better.

  47. I think there is an unfortunate degree of futility with a lot of people. There's a lot of crossover between anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers, people who believe that covid itself is a hoax or even that Trump is a very stable genius. In some cases, all of the above. We're not dealing with people who would just rather not wear one, there are many people who see it is a direct affront or a way of controlling them. The concept of mask wearing is an attack on them.

  48. Personally, I think much of it simply boils down to the Wachowskis not being as good as they think they are. I'm not saying I think they're bad. Matrix was a really good movie, I reckon. I just get the impression that they think so much more of their abilities than is the reality.

  49. This dissection often seemed to be more about whether given shows are funny or not. Though I agree that shows like Trevor Noah's and Stephen Colbert's often feel like pandering to the audience's preconceived convictions as opposed to challenging the status quo. I think to really go into this topic you have to hold comedy news shows up alongside actual news media. The latter is unreliable and has been for a long time. Charlie Brooker does some excellent analyses of the issues plaguing them. Take CNN and Fox. Both are generally peddlers of sensationalist propaganda for their own side. Noah and Colbert, even at their most fawning, are more balanced than they are as well as being more charismatic. Is it any wonder that more and more people turn to such shows for their news?
