  2. Problem is, those issues are usually complicated and hit close to home. Which, typically, people don't like. They prefer stories about curiosities, about small contained tragedies that don't affect them at all. So you're not wrong. But this is just a way that news media and public apathy combine to create distractions.

  3.  @MrACOUSTICPETE  It's sad and frustrating, I have friends who don't want to even think about the myriad problems we face. I don't expect them to think exactly as I do about every issue but I do wish they'd care to a similar degree. I think it'd help if more people felt empowered to bring about positive change. If they felt that there was a chance they'd make a difference, they might engage more. That certainly tends to be the main reason for refusing to vote.
