Something that occurred to me when you made the comparison between Chernobyl and Deep Water Horizon, though not necessarily applicable to either works...
I always struggled to interpret meaning in more subjective works. Come to learn in recent years that I'm quite autistic, in a way that sometimes makes understanding meaning and emotion challenging.
I used to have a friend, massive movie buff, who had a fondness for what I'd call "arthouse", rightly or wrongly. Films which left a lot to the viewer to interpret both in regards to a character's motivation or emotional state as well as the overall meaning or message of a work.
These films always left me mostly confused. I would often either spend so much time trying to figure out what I was watching that I'd miss other important contextual details or I'd just disconnect from the piece entirely.
While there's clearly some criticism to be made of more "objective" filming and editing techniques, it does at least make clear to me what is happening, who thinks what, what they're feeling.
I'm not saying one is right and one is wrong, Chernobyl clearly makes use of perspective on multiple levels as this video demonstrates, some of which I don't struggle with at all. It's incredibly effective, for the most part. All I'd say is that the more onus you put on the viewer to interpret what they're watching, the less accessible it can potentially make the piece to an audience.
