Looking in on the US from the outside, the Dems have never been great either. They just aren't as bad as the Republicans. Yes, that's a terrible reason to vote for someone, but it IS a reason...
What I do wish more "conservative" minded people would be aware of, not just here or in the US but around the world, is that if you pride yourself on your sense of national identity... I won't lie, I've never been comfortable with nationalism because of where it so often leads but if you ain't hurting anyone, wave a flag if it makes you happy, I digress... if one has that national pride within themselves, don't vote for the people who pay only the barest lip-service to that pride.
And you pretty much sum that up, when during a time of national crisis you have a leadership that acts against the interests of their people. And I'm glad you saw that for what it was, a self-serving act that they try to slip under the radar while distracting people with "patriotism". Because, at least in my mind, true patriotism is helping your community, paying your taxes, looking out for your neighbour... not worrying about whether your neighbour goes to the same church or believes there's only two genders.
Hope this doesn't sound patronising, I'm not very good with the whole communication thing. I just see it so much from the Tories over here and the GOP in the States, where they use identity politics to create divides and fan the flames of conflict between groups of people to keep them distracted. They try and make out like there's some great plot, some agenda against "normal people" and it's a gods damned lie. They know exactly what the real plot is because they're behind it.
