The Syrian war was initially between the Democratic rebels vs the Assad regime, but when Russia and Iran got involved, the democratic rebels lost so many men that they had start resorting to employing more and more Islamist extremists, which eventually lead to the collapse and demise of the democratic rebellion from the inside, as it was reborn into a terrorist organisation.
