@jsaint51 That phrase instantly popped into mind as well!

Norm, your analysis on the sound quality differences was spot on. It was amazing how synchronous the players were with each other, too! Very edifying.

Thanks for the comparison both ways. On the one hand it is amazing that real time translation has come so far, but on the other, it is interesting how infinitely complex language is and that it may never be completely programmable.

What contingency are you NOT prepared for, Norm?
2
Norm, I think you should pick someone for whom this trip would be life-changing, as it was for you, so I urge you to select someone between 16 and 24. My wife and I in the US can (barely) afford to go to Japan, and we had tickets booked for March 23, 2020, and yes, that didn't happen, but we did get full refunds on everything, and we have already lived in other countries. You can change a life (for the better) with this lottery. Please do so!
2
Norm, were you 10 when you visited in 2005? Eric Klein from the Kyde & Eric channel just got a Sony A7Siii also and raved about it on his upload from a couple of weeks ago, featuring the low light capture. Seems like a stunning and versatile camera.

Japan, where people and deer bow to each other. But seriously, Norm, your points are well made but I would add a caveat: don't let documenting your experiences get in your way of having them. Not everyone needs to be a "creative" (in new media) and it is often just as valuable to be able to tell a good story at the water cooler. That said, I am grateful for your work and the information you have been able to share. (I don't want to be entered in the giveaway).

Norm, this is an instance of "Forced Commitment" when you got the Strong Zero. We're glad you set this up in advance and explained how it works. Daiko is something that should be universally translated!
1
Lets reprogram the Daleks to destroy all trollbots! Chin up, Norm! You always bring a smile to my face. Keep your stick on the ice.
1
Exquisite walk, Norm!
1
Norm, you should be serious about taking Ayaka-san to Europe! Do a campaign on your channel to fund it and I think you would be surprised at how fast you would reach your goal!
1
The deep channel with water running through was gorgeous!
1
I guess we have to call you Captain Norm from now on, eh? You got one of the best shots of Fuji-san from the boat on Lake Yamanaka! How much did it cost to rent a boat on the lake? What did it cost for your course and the tests? It is really brilliant to be able to watch you through the progression of steps!
1
Norm, we don't often comment, perhaps we ought to, The central core of Tokyo is rather compact. There are a lot of JTubers who follow the Yamanote Line Marathon. Can you do it in a single night and show what might be going on near each station?
1
Hi, Norm. The atmospherics or your video are entertaining but it would be nice to know the specific places your were at for the video. I like to follow fids on Street View to give me a sense of the geography of the places. And thanks for the link to Arata Fukoe! Cool stuff.
1
Wow, Norm, that breakfast looked good! What restaurant was it?
1
Norm, did you get your phone out of the refrigerator before you left?
1
Norn, I have a couple of questions. 1/ Is there a reason why you didn't name/pin the hotel where you staid? If the owner didn't want to be identified, one can respect her wishes, but it is nice to have some clue so one can at least look at the location on Google Maps (which I do ALOT). 2/ Did you get anything interesting from the "Kentucky Kamera Mount" that you left running? :-)
1
@TokyoLens Sorry, as soon as i hit send I thought of looking at the other two descriptions. I did find it just looking down the coast of Iwate. I love the work you do!
1
This is a pretty cool series, Norm. It is an interesting longitudinal study. I imagine there weren't that many North American/Western European travelers at that time.
1
Murakami-san sounds like a cool dude to hang out with. It would have been interesting to do a blind test (as in not know which wheels on the car, not driving blindfolded :-) and seeing what you could tell, but your description of less resistance on acceleration was good, Norm!
1
What a wind-up, Norm!
1
Norm, what is it about you and small things? 🙂 Kana was great--and I am a little surprised the company allowed you to ride with her. Thanks!
1
Norm, your mention of bears reminded me that the US Forestry Service actually had to put out a notice that bear spray and bug spray don't work the same way.
1
Great color saturation, Norm! Each of those locations deserves a stand alone vid--so wonderful!
1
Norm, I think the question should be, would you be able to invite someone over for an assignation in your tiny place, and would that invitation and assignation be successful?
1
What a beautiful paean for this long standing icon, Norm! Job well done! I think you asked all the right questions and made Koichi comfortable telling his story.
1
That shirt was a real coup de grace, Norm! Great to see Tokyo from the water!
1
Great cinematography, Norm!
1
Looking forward to the collab with Emi, Norm! Your shamisen friends are totally rockin' it!
1
Norm, I hope you do more videos like this! Great perspective from your guest!
1
We had tickets and bookings for Bologna in March and Japan in late September. Luckily, when I saw what the crowds were like at the Sapporo Snow Festival it clicked for me that this was going to be serious and I was able to get full refunds on everything. We'll be rebooking as soon as it is not irresponsible to do so. You're great, Norm!
1
We are so delighted to see the continuation of the trail from your previous vid, Norm!
1
Norm, the best content is the stuff you are most excited about. Kyushu doesn't get the YT love it deserves, so we are really looking forward to that aspect. As for "Up in the Air", make sure you have plenty of balloons ! :-) (Pixar movie of the same name.)
1
Norm, I'm not even that fond of arcades and you still managed to wrangle a tear from me.
1
Norm, it took some digging but I finally found the place on Google Maps to pin it for a visit when we get to Shikoku. Yohei-san has some pretty good ventures going on to put some vitality into the area, but even his websites don't reveal his location. The coffee bags look great for traveling!
1
Very nice,! The trees look like tori, better than tori.
1
Norm, I was impressed by the quality of the camera in all the stress tests you put it through, but the flicker is the one area that could be a deal breaker for a more professional look. Sound capture was pretty impressive. But one does have to wonder if the screen is very usable, especially at arms length. Your production quality is quite high, so for you the GoPro 360 is probably better for augmenting a story than relying on it as your main device. How does it compare with a new iPhone?
1
If I were fresh out of Uni and wanted to just get my bearings in Japan, I could have lasted maybe a month, but no more. On the upside, anything else you move into is going to seem huge. Looking forward to seeing your new house tour, Norm! It looks spacious, sunny, and befitting of one with your considerable talents. One great thing about Okazaki-san is that she expresses her opinions/feelings openly and directly.
1
Norm, I learned from Inside Science the BBC and Science Magazine from AAAS that WHERE you direct the cool is more important than how cool it is. For instance, the face, top of the head, hands, feet, and torso are effective places to cool off. The neck is NOT a good place, because the brain basically processes that information/stimulus too quickly and does not continue its cooling response.
1
Gorgeous as always, Norm! Glad you had the other photographer, Hasshi, on. That was nice to see and get his motivation for being there.
1
Kevin's house is what you can do if you don't have cats (viz Rachel and Jun). :-)
1
Norm, I like these quick bites interspersed with your other videos! Thanks for noting the locations, too.
1
Exquisitely evocative, Norm! I worry, though, about the polluting effects of the things left behind, like batteries, CRTs (that's the old glass tube televisions to you youngsters out there), farm chemicals.
1
Norm, do you have any love for the Canadiens in the Stanley Cup finals? We love this series on the camper van!
1
Norm, your enthusiasm for making a video comes through and makes it more exciting to watch.
1
Norm, this may have been the best thing I've hear =d about ChatGPT. The first big shrine you popped into, Suitengu Shrine, has some interesting statues--the "Child Raising Kappa" and the "Kodakara inu". We really enjoyed the itinerary!
1
Norm, either you are a god of edits or Okazaki-san has a great comprehension of English! She's just so wonderful with her enthusiasm and spirit!
1
Speaking of following passions, Norm, have you returned to your flying school? Nice to se Yohei again, and to know there are others helping run the place! Thanks!
1
Tommy from Sabbatical was in that "dangerous" neighborhood earlier this year and had some interesting insights and interactions, and Alyssa from Oriental Pearl went there and the area around Senju that is noted for a large non-housed population. Looking forward to your take on it, Norm!
