  6. The title is misleading. The problem isn't calling ourselves Taiwanese. The problem is how us Taiwanese define the word Taiwan. The official name of our country isn't "Taiwan" it's the "ROC." The PRC and the ROC has a "Governing Relations Act between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area." This means our relationship officially is not "country vs country." It all had to do with the US (sadly again) switching recognition from one Chinese government to another. The US playing games as usual to protect their own interests. The lady in the video also made false comments about how we don't consider ourselves as Chinese in the 70s. During the Tiananmen incident in 89, we clearly reached out to our compatriots on the mainland to show our support in solidarity. We never refused to acknowledge our Chinese roots until post 2000s. We just want to see a different China. One that is closer to our values in the ROC. The current tension is due to the US strategy of containing the rise of the PRC using the ROC as a pawn and canon fodder. I do not accept the Ukraine model for the ROC.

  13.  @yentingchen  You have to understand there are two issues at play. One is our identity as a ROC citizen. Second, is how the US plays on our division. When the US was friendly with the PRC, they did not care about the ROC's identity. What's changed? United States Policy Toward Formosa and the Pescadores [ Washington ,] July 6, 1949. It would now seem clear that the only reasonably sure chance of denying Formosa and the Pescadores to the Communists and insulating the islands from mainland authority would lie in the removal of the present Nationalist administrators from the islands and in the establishment of a provisional international or U.S. regime which would invoke the principle of self-determination for the islanders and would eventually, prior to a Japanese peace settlement, conduct a plebiscite to determine the ultimate disposition of Formosa and the Pescadores. Formosan separatism is the only concept which has sufficient grass-roots appeal to resist communism. Clearly, us ROC is only used as a chesspiece between two superpowers. The world isn't suppoting the ROC. Instead, the world is using Formosan separatism as their resource to contain the PRC. Do you want to be another proxy like Ukraine?

It doesn't matter what you say or think if you refuse to understand the US foreign policy regarding the ROC/Taiwan was the result of what Kissinger said/did. Our history does not change the fact today we still celebrate our nationaly holidy that has nothing to do with the Taiwan island itself. You can cherish our identity within the ROC but to consider yourself as a non-Chinese is a bit far fetched.

  32.  @brotherbig4651  Absolutely wrong. I was born in "Taiwan." Kissinger sold our de jure status to the mainland (China) during the secret meeting between him and Zhou En Lai on July 10th 1971. Kissinger told the mainland Taiwan is a part of China. It's a matter of how to tell the world. He told the mainlanders how to take Taiwan back by manipulating UN votes that passed on October 25th 1971. Then Jimmy Carter formalized this deal citing there will be no relationship between the USA and Taiwan. As of 1971, "China" had full legal authority over Taiwan. If these "Chinese" in "Taiwan" declare independence, the mainland has full legal authority to take their territory back.

We all know most of the time the odds of the pawn surviving the game is slim to none. It's called leverage. The ROC should never commit 100% to either side because that's how you end up negotiating from a position of weakness.

He used his power to manipulate the UN votes so the ROC (Taiwan) lost its UN seat and instead it was given to the PRC (mainland China). The USA was the one who put Taiwan in this position. Mainalnd Chinese never went to the US to ask for this. So why is the US now lying about what happened and not telling the truth?
